STUPID THIEF!! I almost had to shot em!!

Heres the setup:
I live about 3 miles out of town but its not too in the booneys and new houses are being built around my area, it use to be quiet and peaceful but now that the city is growing so fast, its busy busy on my street and theres actually traffic jam here!! there was not traffic since I can remember (18 years)...anyways, My house is gated all around and we have a remote gate door, a long driveway about 30-40 yards before reaching our gurage and we have lights that can shot out to about 20-25 yards within our yard, we live on a 2.5 acre home.

Story:
My dad and I got ready for a fishing trip the day before and we were going to go fishing early the next morning, my dads friend came over so we had the gate open for him to come in, this was about 4 in the morning and the air outside was kind of chilly..my dad open the gurage door about 1/4 of the way just enough for him to go in and grab the fishing poles and stuff and my dads friend came inside for some coffee. My dad walks into the house for about 45 seconds with our door open and Im sleeping in my room but not fully asleep (on of those "just one more min" thing). Anyways, all of the sudden I hear my dad shouting and screaming "bring the gun!" i automatically wake up and opened the gun safe and got my XD, took off the darn lock (they seem to work so slow when your in a hurry) locked and loaded...
I run to the front door and my dad is holding a pocket knive but the theif was holidng a bigger knife (like the rambo type), and I think he was thinking niether kill my dad (since my dad is only about 5'1") or run off, as i was heading out the door, I saw the theif approach my dad but he still had about 15-20 yards before reaching my dad..I pop out of the door with the handgun in my hand and he see's the handgun and then he backs off and starts to run off, my father and i chased him down but he was so afraid now that he ran thru some thin boarded fence across the street to where the new houses were being built. I thought about going after him but he was out of my property already so me and my father came back inside and look at what the guy took.
Within that 45 second or so, he got all four of my BMW racing Rims and wheels rolled out already and he had my UUC SwayBars moved, but i think my father spotted him first before taking it..Anyways, im just happy that nothing happen to my father, if he was to attack my father... God know's how many holes would of been in him.

Now, for those stupid gun law banners or trying to take the 2A away, if this situation was to happen and i didnt have a gun, my father would have been hurt or maybe even killed!

You keep a trigger lock lock on a gun inside of a safe?

Seconds save lives and a locked gun (let alone double locked) is about as good as a rock.

Donno your living situation (as in kids, gun laws, parinoia ect. ect.) but I'd reevaluate double locking your gun. Thats just asking for problems.

nah, its not that i double locked it, its just this time, which sucked, I took my firearm out to the shooting range and i left it locked and put it in the safe..which I know I shouldnt have, bad timing i guess, but luckly it happen the way it did, not I dont even have it locked..I bought a gun lock with the finger code thing and its ready to go now. Learn as you go right? just lucky this one didnt go south...

Besides, on the weekends all of my brothers and sisters kids about 1 year old to 4 year old comes over (7 of them)..I really dont want anything to happen to them.

If the guy was on your property with a knife confronting your father, why didn't you shoot him? Or did he run off right when he saw the gun? I can see no shots are necessary if the guy runs off right when he sees the gun but if he still sits there for a few seconds questioning himself what he should do that's when I would have placed my shot.

Does everyone agree?

I think he did the right thing in this case. Mere seconds seems like a long time in this kind of situation. The bad guy actually might have been already moving away and out the door, just not being noticed as such to mif_slim because of the adrenaline.

It worked out in the best way. The bad guy is gone, no one is hurt or killed, no court to deal with and all property was left in its place.

Now, had the bad guy made just one itty bitty move TOWARDS his father, then I would say a shot would have been in order.

Trigger finger control and a cool head saved him a lot of anxiety.
