I need some advice on carrying in my car. I am going to be carrying IWB (Crossbreed Quikclip) probably between 3:00 and 6:00 somewhere. Haven't figured that out yet. I also cannot carry into my office because of company policy (not supposed to even have it in my car in the parking garage, but screw that). I also can't carry into my daughter's pre-school (Pennsylvania law). Therefore i'll be taking it off and leaving it in my car a lot. I could leave it locked in my glovebox. My center console doesn't have a lock or i would put it there.
My concerns are this: What do i do if i need to use it in an emergency while i'm seated in my car? (ie, carjacking, etc.) Should I have it holstered IWB while i'm driving? If so, how do i get at it quickly with the seatbelt on? I also don't tuck in my shirt so it makes it harder to get my shirt up quickly to get at it while seated. I don't want to have my pistol visible in the car but i want to be able to get at it quickly if i have to. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance, Big Roy |

A hand towel.
Seriously. On the seat covered with a towel. Drawing from IWB in a car is quite a chore. And going from carry to not-carry five times during your drive is a PITA also. I wouldn't worry about locking it in a glove box. If someone breaks into your car, they'll be prying the door off of your glove box within the first three seconds anyway. |

Thanks for the quick reply.
Unfortunately, my wife would never let me just leave it lying in the car loose. I want to secure it somewhere out of site, but quickly accessible. I also don't want it to look shady to a LEO. I definitely know what you mean about taking it out of the holster several times but i have to do it. The best thing would be for me to transition quickly from the holster to another holster or rig attached somewhere to the inside of my car without people seeing it. Especially at my kid's school and my office parking garage. Such a PITA though, i wish more people would be comfortable around Good Guys with firearms. It's so taboo but really shouldn't be. How about this?
http://www.securityandsafetysupply.c...protech-8.html Thoughts? Anyone seen something better? Also, this looks good, but what happens to it when you unhook the seatbelt? It looks like it would come loose and you have to re-thread the belt every time. http://thewilderness.com/catalog/ind...9245f14e3a3788 Last edited by bigroy1231; 06-01-2007 at 08:56 AM. |

The real problem is "gun free zones" but you can't really fix that one on your own.
I carry IWB in the car, about 4-4:30, I always make sure my shirt is loose for easy access, at night I usually just drop the shirt behind the gun since at least in MI, having the gun inside your vehicle constitutes concealed. Plus IWB behind your hip is pretty inconspicuous in the car anyway. I bring my small electronic safe when I travel, but otherwise I either lock it in the glove box (makes it safe from casual smash and grab, but also is the first place a thief will look) or just hide it elsewhere more out of sight. I don't like to unholster/reholster my IWB, so I avoid that wherever possible. I don't find it that difficult to get at when driving, but every person and vehicle is different on that score. bottom line, figure out what is the easiest for you and make sure you are comfortable with it. That seat holster looks pretty good, cheap too. Might be worth checking out, although doesn't solve the problem of what to do when you leave the vehicle with the weapon in it.

Any other time i should have the pistol IWB when not in the car. The only problem with that holster though is that it says it's for a 4" or 5" pistol, and i have a 3" XD-9 SC. |

We have all that here in OH, and just got rid of "plain sight".... A 3" gun should fit either of those carriers just fine. The XD-9 SC is kinda big, and the only difference between it and the longer ones is the top end and magazine. I can't do a cross-draw the way that second holster is shown. I'm too big around.... There are a bunch of inexpensive "safes" you can put in a vehicle that may be adequate, but all sort of scream "GUN" if seen. I think I'd just use the glovebox. We can't do that in OH - gotta leave the gun at home - with respect to schools (and employers who don't like us). Unless you've got a Hummer, or one of the top-ten "steal me" cars, the real issue is somebody seeing you swap the gun into a container. It's not the best idea in the world to do that while actually driving (and a Felony in OH if you read the law in some ways I don't quite agree with) and pulling over a block away is also a pretty good "look at me".... Kids are kind of interesting.... When my little girl (she's now 21 and a shooter) was still in a crib and barely talking, the wife and I were going out for the evening, and I happened to walk into her bedroom while wearing a PPK/S and not wearing a jacket. "Daddy? Is that a gun?" Yikes.... Regards,

i usually leave the gun under the seat if i'm not carrying. like when i go to my parents with the wife to swim or whatever, i leave the gun in the car, it's not going to get broken into in their neighborhood in the driveway and i have no need for a loaded firearm in my parents house. there are shotguns in the house if i needed something.
i need to check the pa law about car carry, but i'm pretty sure what the sheriff told me was right that i can have it anywhere i want in the car as long as i have my permit. i usually have it on my lap, across my left leg with the muzzle facing the driver's door. when i buckle up, the seat belt lays across the slide and keeps it pretty secure, but the gip is exposed if i needed it while still in the car. i only have an OWB holster right now so i always have something untucked over it while carrying and that makes it a pain with the seatbelt to get to if i needed it in a hurry. when i reholster in the car, it probably just looks like i'm putting my wallet in my back pocket. i don't like the holster on the side of the seat because when you open your door, you show everyone a holster and if the gun's in it, that too. |

i have seen gun "bags" mad of metal mesh and cloth that lock to something. prevents grab and go and is very inconspicuous...i can't recall the name of the product or company, however. sorry...
as for taking the gun off to drop your daughter off and whatnot, here's what i do. i have a crossbreed supertuck and i use the hooks that you have to thread the belt through (i feel they are more secure for drawing/reholstering/general movement). because of this, the holster itself is a b!tch in the on/off department. my alternative is to keep a second holster (cheap-o uncle mikes clip-on) in the "hidden" compartment under my center console...need to disarm? i simply put the gun in the holster in the "hidden" compartment, and viola! fairly inconspicuous activity, especially since i have tinted windows. barring a hidden compartment, i'd suggest under the seat, or the xd gear holster mod if you have one...(semi)permanent install of the holster under the dashboard. like where your knees go...
