I think i found my solution...

Smartcarry has a car holster that uses an adhesive patch that you can stick anywhere and the holster velcro's onto it. I could put it under the dash, on the door, under the seat, etc. I think that should do it for me. Check it out here:

http://www.smartcarry.com/products.htm

The hard part is picking a place to put it because the adhesive is permanent. The best spot may be on the bottom of my seat, but will i be able to draw from there quickly enough?

Consider the situation where a carjacker is at your window. I guess if he was able to get that close to you and has a pistol pointed at you it's too late to draw eh? Thoughts? If my daughter is in the back strapped in her car seat, there is absolutely no way in hell i'm going to get out of the car. I'm either flooring it and hoping for the best or i'm drawing and firing the pistol.

Here's what I did for an easy draw while driving:

How I mounted my XD Gear holster in my car!

The idea of leaving my gun under the seat or on a seat with a towel covering it while driving sounds like a terrible idea to me. What if it slides up under your brake pedal? What if you're involved in an accident and it goes flying around inside your car? I wouldn't want to get whacked upside the head with that heavy thing!

Many reasons not to do that, in my opinion..

As for leaving the gun in the car while you have to go somewhere carry isn't allowed, I use one of these:

Let me know if you have any questions about either topic. They have both worked out quite well for me.

Lightbulb Is it a done deal already?

Several companies make lockable steel inserts that are essentially safe boxes that fit inside your center console either the size of one weapon or of the entire console. They cost several hundred dollars but many thousands of dollars less than the lawsuit you can expect in almost any state these days if some darwin breaks into your car, makes off with your ccw and hurts someone. Heck, these days you'd probably be held responsible if they hurt themselves. Just a thought...

Lightbulb MiniVault

You can also get a MiniVault gun safe at your local hardware (jerry's) store and bolt it into the trunk. They run about $40. Obviously these are options for securing the weapon when you leave it unattended in the vehicle and not for times when you might need rapid access.

So, bigroy, what did you ever decide?

My XD Gear holster has been secured under my dash, as per the link I provided earlier, for almost a year now and I love it! It works great!

I just picked up one of these for $30:

I realize it's cheap and would be easily pried open, but it shows "I tried".

I found the easiest solution is to buy a "car gun". This accomplishes two things for me:

1. I can keep my IWB on me while driving in case I need to exit in a hurry, that way I'll always have a gun on me.

2. I don't have to worry about drawing while seated from IWB, as that is a PITA.

Best solution I've found. IWB on at all times, "car gun" in center console, glove box, etc. for quick access. I use a KelTEC p3at for this. Thinking about getting an xd subbie instead.

Thoughts?

My decision

I realized my subcompact would fit perfectly in my Mazda Tribute in the bottom compartment, center of dash. It's pretty deep inside and high enough that i could mount it to the top inside and no one would see it.

Check out the picture and you'll see where i mean.

I think i'm going to use the crappy plastic holster that came with my XD and velcro it there with some industrial strength velcro from home depot.

Being LH I am pretty fortunate. I unholster, and lay it in the door panel pocket. It fit's perfect, and all that is visible is a small portion of the handle.

I'm about to do what Mojoski did in his car to my Jeep. I may try to find a way to make my quick detach though so I can move it between my Jeep and the wife's car.
