Survival rate of handgun shots

Last night, my concealed carry instructor said that 74% of recorded people shot with a handgun survive the incident. He said this statistic also included people shot as far back as the 1800's when medicine was a little more primative.

While I have no reason to disbelieve that (because I've seen lots of data to imply that's the case), I'm curious if anybody knows where I might find a credible source to back this statement. It's fascinating stuff.

So should the old saying be changed to don't bring a pistol to a rifle fight?

These are the stats I've been told in training.

The point was even if you get SHOT, keep fighting you probably won't die and getting hit doesn't mean you have lost.

I think unless the hit was vital I'd probably keep going on adrenaline for a short time, but would then immediately turn into an oozing pile of worthless goo. No, that's NOT my normal state.

Pistols are carried because they are handy not because they are effective. If you have any warning at all your going into harms way bring a rifle.

Ever heard the phrase, "Ill have my 10...."

This was referring to a vital organs shot, heart, lungs, etc, that even after the hit, you will die from blood loss to the brain which takes up to 10 seconds. So when you shoot them in the heart, they have 10 seconds to shoot back....

I saw have only seen one person get shot with a pistol. It was a .22 target pistol and it hit him right in the side of the head. The bullet hit the skull and ricochet up. He never lost conciousness.

My instructor said the same thing in our class. He said it was an FBI statistic. I searched the net and looked at the FBI site but was unable to find any statistics.

The reason handguns are survivable and rifles are not is the shock wave that is produced in the body by the bullet that does damage around the wound cavity. The higer velocity or a rifle round will cause greater tissue damage in a body than a slower handgun round. This is a very basic explanation by the way.

I've heard similar from my class with Gabe Suarez, but haven't independently researched yet. I'll see if I find anything.

this is why no army has ever taken the field armed with handguns alone. the handgun is a sidearm, a back up weapon, or an up close and personal last resort.
