I got pulled over last night.

We were out with some friends over in Iowa last night til about 3am. We headed back to Omaha and had to take them home first, which is just over in Sarpy County. After we dropped them off we came to a stoplight out on highway 370 that wouldn't change to green. I had been sitting there a few minutes and it didn't change. I've never known this light to be that long before, I've stopped at it many times.

Well, naturally my fiancee says... just go, nobody is around and it's not going to change. So I go. Right when I'm making the turn I see a car come over the next hill and I could have sworn I saw lights on top of it. But I drove probaby 1/2 mile and nothing happened so I just kept wondering. I was waiting to get under some street lights ahead so I could see if there were lights on top. right about then, the overheads turn on and I'm being pulled over.

This was in Sarpy County and it was a deputy that pulled me over. As soon as he came up to the window he asked how am I doing tonight, and for my license and registration. I then told him I need to first inform him that I'm a permit holder and I have my gun in my safe there on the floor. I had just come from Iowa, so I had it all locked up and hadn't put it back on me yet because it was just a straight drive through on interstate. He said ok, and I handed him my license and permit. I then had a hard time finding my registration and proof of insurance because I had just renewed and I had sat my booklet thing on the seat and it got sat in the trunk when I cleaned the back seat for our friends. so I had a fun time finding that lol.

Well, there were open alcohol containers in the vehicle, as well as closed ones. I had not been drinking. My friends left their alcohol in the vehicle because they said they wouldn't drink it so we could have it. I didn't know they left empties in there. He didn't ask me about it, but I know he saw it so I told him that was our friends alcohol and we just dropped them off, but I haven't been drinking. Finally found the registration and gave it to him, he asked me to have a seat and he'll be right back.

He said just remember to wait until the light changes next time. He said it's a long light, and if you have to wait more than 5 minutes then you're probably waiting too long at that point. That's all I got was a verbal warning. Everything went perfectly smoothe and he told us to have a nice night. Not once did he even ask me for possession of the gun which was right at my feet in the lock box, and not once did he even consider giving me a field sobriety test even though there were open containers in the vehicle.

I must admit though, I wish I would have had my gun in my pocket when I was pulled over. I have been curious how cops would handle that situation. But I suspect with this officer it would have been the same, pretty much a non issue.

had this happened in Douglas County they likely would have wanted to see my handgun registration card I bet, even if it wasn't in Omaha city limits. And they may have wanted to have the gun and check it against the card. But anyways all went smoothe and we went on our way.

I know in Texas we are required to show our CHL anytime we are asked for ID. I have been pulled over a few times and was carrying and have never been asked for my weapon. They usually ask where it is and that's it.

I have been pulled over on the way home from shooting in the desert. When the deputy asked for my license and registration, I kindly informed him that I had firearms in the back seat of the vehicle, that they were in cases, and that the ammo is seperate. He glanced thru the rear window (F-250 extended cab) and just said fine. Went and did his business running my license for warrants, came back handed my paperwork to me, and told me to have a good day. No ticket, no harassment for the guns, and not a lick of trouble. Also, I might add that he was a Sherrif's Deputy, they seem to be more relaxed about that stuff. It seems like many of the municipal police around here would have emptied their mags at the first mention of a firearm in the vehicle.
