My dad's Service Pistol
I learned to shoot with my dad's 9mm Model 59 Smith and Wesson.

Contrary to Jeff Cooper's old advice, I'd start with a .22. That's how I learned to shoot. Don't linger as long as I did. Get him on new calibers soon, but keep going back to the .22. The .22 will give confidence. The bigger ones will give him something useful that he can shoot.

id like to think i am pretty decent at 50 ft with a bone stock .45 xd compact. I have less than 400 rounds and i think i am getting pretty good, i can really knock out a decent part of the bulleye in the target.
I had shot my dads 9mm as a kid, many shotguns, sks, ak47, 308, 30/30. , .357 and 44 mag, . 40 cal sigs, and stuff borrowed from uncles and friends when i was a teenager. The .45 was my first gun i got it in january. I dont think i have any bad habits. If i do i am well on my way to becoming a crack shot if i have bad habits and i can shoot as well as i do. If anythign i would assume his first shots might be crappy, but if he has decent sized hands, decent strength and size (I am 6'4 250 lbs) if i was 90 lbs 5th grader it might be to much to learn on .... learn as trying to be good, not to big to learn safety and some fun and respect for firearms. I shot .357 and .44 mags when i was a puny skinny teen. Last edited by billbrasky; 05-11-2007 at 08:10 PM. |

Back On Topic, I can't remember what the first caliber I shot was, but I do remember plinking with a buddy's .22LR's, "daddy's" 870 was the first shotgun I shot, and a little .22LR SA revolver was the first pistol. when I hit 18 the first firearm I ever bought was a used Mossberg 500 persuader, first pistol I owned was a Ruger P89.

I started with a .38 spl Full wadcutters when i was eight years old, My dad would kneel beside/behind me and help hold it up. He practiced for Police competition matches and always saved 5 or 10 rounds for me...When i was 15 i was allowed to purchase my first pistol with his help and encouragement that was a .22 cal Hi Standard Heavy duity Military. I still have it to this day and shoot it alot. I am now closer to 60 than 50 and Still shoot many calibers quite proficiently, I feel i learned from one of the BEST, (my Dad).

Yep. The movie was Harley Davidson and the Marlboro Man. I could watch that movie once a week probably.

First pistol I shot was at Navy Boot Camp in 1970. 36 years later I started with a .40 S&W. Those first few (perhaps many) range visits were not pretty.
