I left IL over 12 years ago. I have turned down some really good positions paying quite well and other favorable deals requiring moving back or spending a lot of time there and have refused all of them because, well, because they were in IL.

I'm gonna end up in the same boat. I have an alum friend that said he'd try to get me in with Worley Parsons after I graduate . . . however, the office is in the Chicago area. I won't take the job. The four states I won't live in are NY, WI, IL, and CA.

Add most of the rest of the NE to that and we'd be in complete agreement.

PA is still a good state when it comes to gun laws. You can open carry at 18 in my county without a permit.

Which is why I said "most" and I personally wouldn't have included PA in the "northeast" classification anyway.

I think the recent anti-gun hysteria is a combination of 1) VT shooting 2) MSM's spate of local shooting stories being reported as national news 3) the liberal seize the weapons at any cost crowd having hope with the dems in congress and a likely dem win in the whitehouse in 2008.

Forgot about those. I know it seems stupid to people that don't see things the way I do and that I'm pretty much limiting myself to the midwest and the south/southeast for a job, but I want to go somewhere where just maybe the Constitution still applies.

Illinois has been like this for a long time. I could seriously rant up a storm about Chi-town politicians that would make Gunny Ermey blush and Gomer Blagojevich would think Gomer pyle got off easy.

Look at the laws:
FOID Card: Basically, gun owner registration, plain and simple. I could not even handle a handgun in the store until I was 21 (don't know if that was fed or state), can't touch a gun in a store unless you show them a valid foid card. Plus, King Daley's Gestapo teams confiscating guns. Where is the NRA or GOA on this? They should be riding into town like gang busters.
Waiting periods: 3 day for handgun, 1 day for long gun (not as bad as some, but in IN I could walk out with whatever I purchased after filling out the 4473). If you're gonna have the FOID card, do away with the waiting periods.
Carry: HAH! I carry on my property when I go home for break and that's it (I'm almost waiting for them to tell me I can't do that). I have a better chance of making Grand Master in USPSA after 2-3 matches than concealed carry has a chance of coming to Illinois
SB 16: Currently in the Senate, a ban on a lotta stuff. Full text here Note where all of the co-sponsors are from.

Sorry, didn't mean to go off on a rant, but it's been building for awhile now. At least the great state of Indiana trusts me to carry a handgun for the protection of myself and my family.

Yeah, and also about the "law enforcement will never go along with violating 2nd right" lines.

The way I see it, when and if the order comes, the cops will faithfully knock on every door with their weapon at the ready, and we will all comply and surrender.

I don't know. The recent crap in IL has caused my parents, who have lived most of their adult lives in IL, to finally decide to leave the state upon my father's retirement in a few years. They asked me to start looking for property for them to build on here. I have a friends who have businesses in far southern or western IL who are investigating moving them across the rivers to MO or KY. A large company I work with has asked me several times to do business in IL and were even willing to absorb some of the cost of setting it up but I refused. Last time they asked (4th time I think) with an even sweeter deal they admitted they are having trouble getting good work out of IL and getting people who do good work to go into IL.
Another friend who lives in Chicago (we both love the city but hate the administration) is looking for a job in 2 other states to get out of there. My parents know several business owners who, if the gross receipts tax pass, are already planning to move their businesses to neighboring states.

My point is that people who have the means and ability to leave, may leave in much greater numbers than the IL gov't expects. There are border states that have much more respect for personal property, 2nd amnd and SD rights than IL has. In short, the entire state of IL may end up looking a lot like E. St. Louis in economic and social prosperity.

what are you talking about? East St. Louis is a nice safe place to be. In fact, I felt so safe one time when I was going through there, when I made a wrong turn I ended up on a street where I felt so safe.. I immediately turned around and headed back the other way I just came from! lol

I can't beleive people in this country have allowed the govt to gain so much power and control over their rights like this for so long. It sickens me. How can people just sit back while they have their rights violated? I don't understand it. It this would have happened back when people had guts in this country.. the MEN would have been marching on city hall or whatever they had back then.. with pitch forks, torches, and guns. They would have set their govt straight.

There would have been gunshots fired in the name of freedom, and nobody would have complained.
