i don't think you need a camera that takes AA batteries. My camera will stay charged for almost 600 photos. I can fully charge it and use it for a LONG time before it needs recharged. Not once have I ever ran out of juice using the camera. As long as the battery your camera has is lithium ion, you'll be fine. And you're not likely to find the better quality cameras running off of AA or AAA batteries anyways.

The only time I have my camera charger with me is when I'm going out of town and staying somewhere. And even then I've never had to use the charger. The newest batteries in these cameras have amazingly long run times. And there are many things you can do to help them last longer. For example, making it so the pictures don't show on the LCD screen too long.. change the setting down to 1-2 seconds. Turn off the beep. Turn off the auto-focus assist light when using in lit conditions. Also don't sit and zoom in and out a lot if you don't need to. that uses power.

I would like to point out that on a lot of Sony and Canon smaller cameras, you get a lot of purple shading on the edge of brighter objects. Some cameras do this really bad. I've never noticed it much at all with my fuji.

And one more note on batteries. Trust me, cameras use AA or AAA batteries up fast. To even have decent runtime you'll need to buy lithium-ion batteries. last I checked you're at least $12 for a 4 pack. I think that might have been on sale too. I've used someone's camera that used AA batteries and they did not last near as long as a normal camera battery that's lithium-ion. Btw, right now fuji cameras have one of the best batteries on the market for these smaller cameras.

Make sure that the dealer is an authorized representative of the manufacturer. Many camera companies will void the warranty if you do not buy from an authorized dealer. Make sure the camera was originally for sale in the USA. There are cameras shipped from overseas that come with manuals in Japanese, Korean, etc. These cameras are called "Grey Market" cameras, and their warranties will not be valid in the USA.
+1 on that. my friend and I each got a Nikon D-50 that came programmed in Japanese, so i'm pretty sure my warranty is toast. The NYC camera people are just sickeningly horrible, I don't know if i have the words to spare to express how crappy they are. The one that I went through is ccicameracity.com but it's like a hydra, lots of heads leading to the same worthless body, so watch out. A good, reputable site that some professional friends of mine swear by for photo/video equipment is http://www.bhphotovideo.com/

Try them, they're good people. And good luck. If you feel like dropping a bit more, get a Nikon D-40 or D-50. I think they're phasing out the D-50's, so you might be able to get a good deal on one of those.

Are you wanting a SLR or a Point and Shoot...

The SLR's are bigger but have better picture qaulity, also cost a little more.. to get atleast a 8mp. in that you'll need around $500 give or take.

For point and shoots, for under $300.. you wont get a lotta bang for your buck but I'd recommend..

For example, HP cameras that I've had experience with have especially crappy build quality.

Before you buy, research. Read reviews from the following sites to get an idea what features you're looking for:

Let me respond to few things above.

First off, Casio does make quality cameras and the generalization about electronic companies is bogus.

Each of the "good" companies listed above has made crap cameras. I've grown to dislike Canon and Sony with other products. Canon printers and scanners, along with Sony video equipment, doesn't last more than a couple of years.

The Casio model (EX-Z850 EXILIM) that I have purchased was highly rated by several independent reviews. If I recall correctly, a major product review publication rated it #1 in it's class (ultra-compact) at the time.

If you look at http://www.steves-digicams.com listed above and read the review of the Casio EX-Z850, it was prasied for image quality, features set, and quality of build.

The negative statement about NYC camera companies is not totally true. There are many bad, but there are a few excellent companies. I've used B&H Photo many times and they are also rated very high by http://www.resellerratings.com/

The Casio EX-Z1050BK 10.1MP at Buy.com for $265.99 with free shipping is a sweet deal for nice little camera.

Here ya go, onlyh $54 higher than you suggested. I've bought several items, including a digital slr, from this company, and have had no problems. You do get a U.S. warranty, and service is quick.

A camera, even a point-n-shoot, with no provision for external flash is worthless to me. Built-in flash is wimpy.

This camera is 9 megapixels; has a huge zoom. (You ought to disable digital zoom on any camera you buy, as it's worthless.)

http://www.buydig.com/shop/product.aspx?sku=FJFPS9000

Go to Wal-Mart and get the Digital name brand one-hour battery charger for just under $19. Comes with four 2500 mah batteries and works all over the world with no adapter. You can get four extra batteries for under $7.

You know B&H is in NYC right?

adorama.com is another 100% reputable dealer. I usually order my camera stuff from there. I've also ordered from buydig.com (7 or 8 cameras between myself and family) and have not had a problem.
