Ok, so I decided to crack one of the brews tonight. Its a nut brown ale. Ok, pictures first.

Ok, initial impressions! First, good amount of head, and good retention. The only detractor here is the chill haze, which goes away as soon as it warms up a few degrees. Generally, chill haze isnt tasted (by me anyway), so I really dont care. Aroma is nutty, with a hint of fruit. Color is a nice copper.

First taste is light, a tad bit watery, but the finish is smooth. The initial taste is complex, with hints of caramel, a bit of acid, but overall sweet flavor. The finish is smooth, a tinge of bitterness. Overall, a sweeter beer. Its lighter, and not very filling, and I count these as good things. Im guessing this is brewed to be a lighter beer to appeal to a wide audience.

A few observations for further brewing When cooling the wort after the boil, you want to chill it as quickly as possible. I usually drop the pot in ice, and I have a copper wort chiller that Ill add prior to the end of the boil (usually >30 minutes). IMO, this is the best way to avoid the chill haze. Its not really a taste issue, but if someone is reviewing your beer for competition, youll get marked down for it. Im not picky enough to care

Overall, Id give this an 8/10. Excellent brew overall, very drinkable, nothing really to detract from the flavor.

Three reasons for us all to visit Oregon 1) Springer Precision 2) Rogue Brewery and 3) Deschutes Brewery oh and 1a) Thunder Ranch

Also, Stone IPA or Arrogant Bastard Ale (even though it comes from Cali )

Up here in Alaska, Mooses Tooth (+1 to Richard L Shield) and Glacier Brewhouse - Ice Axe (9%)

Did you ever try Sam Adams Triple Bock. Now that was some **ucked up sh*t. 17% using maple syrup and champagne yeast

I was once fortunate enough to get paid to fly to Denver from Alaska to attend The great American Beer Festival. You CAN drink too much beer!

Needless to say there's lots of great beer out there. You just gotta find it and keep it to yourself until there's enough to go around.

Oregon is the epicenter of excellent American beer. They grow world-famous hops in the Willamette Valley and there are dozens of craft brewers that win big awards every year.

Hey, that Alaskan Amber is pretty respectable, too.

Unfortunately in most places in the US it's hard to find anything but the usual rice-spiked industrial beer, like Bud, Coors, etc. Sam Adams is one of the few decent beers you can find once you leave the craft beer havens.

The story is that American beer changed during WWII when women entered the workforce and created a strong market demand for an after-work brew (God bless 'em!). Brewers will tell you that most women prefer a light crisp lager, not the heavy ales guys like. Lots of brewers added more rice in place of barley to give the customers what they wanted. Light beer!

Yeah, I've had their Triple Bock.. it's pretty nasty. Then again, its the scrapings off the bottoms of the vats.

Oregon is deffinately Microbrew Mecca. I enjoy all kinds of beer. I like to switch around. I still enjoy a bottled Bud. Then again, I don't get my coffee from Starbucks either. Guess I'm not all that Hoity Toity.
