Inexpensive vacation ideas?

I haven't taken a vacation in a couple years and am in dire need of one. Haha. But of course, me being the lowley enlisted man, funds are a bit of an issue. Any of you guys have any good, inexpensive vacation ideas? I live at the beach, so no beach vacations, haha.

hmm no beach vacations huh? The cheapest best vacation I know of is Mexico. I will be going agian for my second time next month. I have family that has gone there nearly a dozen time. We stay in Playa Del Carmen, in Quintana Roo.

I see you are from VA, And this beach and ociean are nothign like what you see every day. The water temp is bath water, clear blue water, white sand beaches that are made of coral so they dont get hot. And also it has I bleive the second largest reef in the world off the coast.

On that note, I personaly like the snorcaling and whatnot, but I hate the beach. The town is nice, and is a lot of fun even without the beach.

I'm an outdoorsy type. I like fresh air. Not a big fan of large cities. Thinking of maybe a camping trip somewhere. I'm a history buff as well. Hmmm, thats actually a pretty tough question, haha. Haven't been on many vacations.

http://www.expedia.com/daily/activit...sp?rfrr=-37442 Use the ideas they give you. Even if you don't book through a site like these, they usually have links of must see places and activities. Check out the last minute deals sections too.

Well, do you like Civil War history? There are TONS of battlefields and campgrounds within a day or so drive of you. You have the Smoky Mountains very close. Lots of outdoors things to do there and it is BEAUTIFUL! You have Monticello and Mount Vernon fairly close by, both touristy but lots of history. Push on to TN and you have lots of beautiful places in the western part of the state and again, lots of Civil War history.
Eastern KY also has some beautiful state parks around the Cumberland Gap area. I've spent little time in the Carolinas so really can't help much there. (My mom is a huge Civil War buff and over the years we visited tons of battle fields all over that region and did other sight seeing).

If you are not a AAA member it may be worth the $55 to become a member so that you can go there and get a trip book for nearby states. They have all sorts of site seeing info, camping site info, etc.

I love railroads, so an easy, (relatively) cheap trip I like is to find a scenic day trip railroad (or overnight) and ride it. You see beautiful country, enjoy all the old steam age (or diesel) rolling stock, and I'm willing to bet there are some really cool old lines in Appalacian country not too far from where you are. We've got some beautiful ones out west in AZ and CO, but the East has some too. I usually try to work the excursions in as part of a larger road trip through an area I'd like to explore.

I'm liking these ideas. I was thinking of a train ride earlier. I might have to look into it.
