Shottie Ammo

So I went to the range to try out my new shottie so I bought a box of shells at walmart (100 rounds of bird/target shot). I bought the weaker shells as I've been told this should be what to fire when living in a condo/apartment. Anyways, I told the cashier at the range what I had and what ammo I was shooting and he said I could only shoot 00buck or slugs as the smaller shot ruin the auger in the back. Does this make sense to anyone?

Bird Shot is for birds.
If your afraid of hitting the people next door, the lightest shot I would get would be
#4 Buckshot.
I personally use 00.
00 pellets are about the size of 9mm bullets and there are usually 9 of them
in a shell. Talk about stopping power!
Go to The Box O Truth websight and look up the Shotgun Test.
That will show you the effects of 00 on drywall.

My dad (a deputy sheriff) has worked a scene where a home invader was shot with birdshot. He had a nasty wound but it was not life threatning and he was sitting on the back bumper of the ambulance hand cuffed cusing up a storm.

Like someone else above said for a HD shotty #4 buck at the least. I pack 00 buck and slug. But my shotty has a 30 inch barell right now and I don't keep itloaded for a HD gun, its way to long. My wife has her 1911 clone and I have my XD-9 for that.

Like they said check out the box o truth website they test various shotgun loads on walls and water jugs.

Another vote for 00 buck. My 870 always stays loaded with 00 buck in case of a home invasion. Like some others have said, bird shot is not a very good personal defense load.

my 870 is loaded with alternating rounds of 3 1/2" 00 buckshot and 2 3/4" slugs. the 00 has 18 pellets and kicks like a mule, but i feel that if ever needed, it would probably do the job. it will either cut them in half or they will $hit themselves to death right on the spot!!!

#7 or #8 shot will NOT hurt a darned thing on ANY shotgun, regardless of the choke or model!

When I got my 870 my first use was as a bird gun. So, I would go to the local sporting clay set up and spend a few bucks to go all day. That was my use for the 28" barrel. Change the bead on the barrel, to a Hi-viz, large fiber optic sight, it helps. Go bird hunting.

For the home defense deal. Look at this, being the most extreme. http://snipercountry.com/Articles/Rem870Express.asp. In lieu of that, I bought a 16" barrel from a guy on ebay, maybe buy from a guy on XDTalk, put some fiber optic sights on it bought from Cabelas. If you wish there are night sights available for the 870. However, I use the slug barrel for deer, so all the bells and whistles that are available I don't need. Maybe you want them? It really doesn't matter.

What matters is you have an 870 and you can make it work for you.

I use 3" 00Buck for the house. Personally, wouldn't go higher than #4, but check out boxotruth, as mentioned earlier.

Do not listen to the alternating 00 and slug theory.

If you do the bulk box ammo from Walmart find out what ammo works best. The Winchesters always give me FTE's. Use good ammo while hunting.

Tex1980...google defensive shotgun. I get it ammo is ammo. If you really need a slug, maybe you really need a rifle?

Original question of thread..."ruin the auger" Perhaps, some contraption to clean the lead out of a place? Don't know what the clerk means. Wish I could help. Can you call the range and ask, talk to a range master?

Can anyone help with the auger question?

Okay,

Here are the rounds I bought for use at the range first. They are federal clay and target 8 shot, 12 guage, 3 dram 2 3/4".

The auger, I believe is kind of a rotating drill like that runs the width of the trap and pushes the lead down to some kind of hold. Not quite sure I'm explaining well enough. Thanks for the input.
