Yuck. Steep and cheap. The crack cocaine of the outdoor world. The best way to follow this evil sight it to download their "Desktop Alert" program. That way when they sell out of one item, you get a pop up that shows the next item. It's too addictive. I did get a Marmot Never Winter sleeping bag the other day for $69.

Tents - I have an Alps Mountaineering Mystique 2 that has been great especially for the price with the BSA discount. I also has an EMS Eclipse I bought for the easy set up, but it's a single wall. Did well in a 6 hour thunderstorm last month. And I'm trying to get lighter, so my other new tent is an MSR Missing Link, also a single wall.

Any of those quality brands will work - Mountain Hardware, TNF, Walrus (now MSR), Eureka, REI. I don't know if you've checked them, but watch sierratradingpost.com, campmor.com, rei-outlet.com, outdooroutlet.com and bobwards.com.

It sure is nice to ride out a storm, warm and dry, in a tent you have confidence in. And if you figure the cost by year, it's not that much.

I use a surplus Marine tent that my supply sgt acquired for me...works like a charm. Far better than the shelter halves we got issued. It's made by Eureka...I'm sure they have a civilian version.

this is another I've been looking at.. http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/te...103&hasJS=true

But at $250, it's more than the hammerhead 2. I have also looked at the REI tents.. and have considered the half dome they have.. I've read lots of great reviews on that tent.

Lightweight is great... but I don't live in an area where you'll be hiking and needing to pack a lot of gear. The tent will generally be a tent at normal campgrounds.. taken there in a vehicle.. rarely will I have a chance to go on any trail to hike in and camp.

I'm just not a fan of Cabelas. I'm sure some of their stuff is good, but some many people act like kool-aid drinkers when they talk about it. I have to hear enough of that from Glock and Dillon owners. Now when I see the IMAX crew using Cabelas gear on their Everest expedition, I'll change my tune. Until then, I'll buy from who ever makes their gear for them. Good prices on the Hammerhead, and MSR Hubba here - http://www.campmor.com/webapp/wcs/st...ategory_rn=250

cabelas gear is used all across this world.. what are you talking about? and most of it, is just as high quality, as the other stuff that is double the price. And on top of that, Cabelas stands behind their gear.. if it's cabelas brand stuff, and it fails, they will replace it.. simple as that.

I've got an ultralight backpacking tent. It's a 1 man, but they make 2 man versions, as well as "ultralight (read: 1 pole vs 2)" version. It's a EUREKA SPITFIRE and it has been one hell of a little tent. I absolutly love it. It's light, for 1. It's fast and easy to set up, for 2. It's super waterproof (3 seasons, but I've been snowed on in it, rained on in it several times: downpours, sprinkles, thunderstorms, etc), for 3. It's also spacious for a 1 man tent. I can sit up in it and roll my bag and mat, load my pack (which I keep dry and close in the small foyer) without leaving the comfort of my tent and getting out into the snow, rain, etc, for 4. Without the rainfly on it, you get zero privacy since it's mostly mesh, but that also means you get excellent breathability with or without the rainfly. Did I mention I love my spitfire?

I've been very happy with my Alps tent. In fact, we bought a bunch for our Boy Scout troop, and they're holding up very well. If you know any Boy Scouts, you can get a great discout from Alps (scoutdirect.com). And see? Now I have to expand my list of things you can never say anything negative about - Cabelas, Dillon, Glock, and the 1911.
