I've never owned a shotgun....<NOW WITH PICTURE!!!>

before Friday!

Thursday night, we get a call from my daughter's sitter, she has the flu, and can't watch my daughter the next day. Looks like a daddy-daughter Friday is in the cards. I make a run to Walmart to pick up a few things, taking my time since I know I don't have to get up early for work the next day.

I wander through Sporting Goods, and spot a shotgun on clearance. It's a Winchester 1300 12 gauge with a nice walnut stock. The price? $125.00. It's sitting next to another 1300 with a lighter hardwood stock, and the lighter stock isn't marked down. I spin the rack, and notice a Winchester 1300 compact 20 gauge on clearance for $75.00, and next to it, a Mossberg 500 20 gauge youth model for $50.00. I call the kid working the late shift over, and I fondle all 3, and notice the Mossberg has quite a bit of rust on the outside of the barrel, but for $50, I can deal with that later. The kid informs me he can't sell them to me at the late hour, even though I have a CCW, because Walmart has to call and verify that my CCW is legit. They also can't hold any of them, because they are clearance items. Nevermind the fact I have cash in hand, and would gladly exchange said cash on the spot for the firearms, their policy won't let them sell them to me that late, and their policy won't allow them to guarantee that the items will be there at 9 in the morning when they will be allowed to sell them to me.

I tell my wife about them, and tell her I'm considering buying all 3. She tells me, "I think if you don't buy all 3, you'll be kicking yourself later..." Wife instantly earns a little more respect.

I toss and turn that night, and show up at 8:30 the next morning to buy all three, which are all still there. As I fill out the paperwork, I talk to the brand new Sporting Goods manager, who informs me the guns were all transferred in from a California store that was no longer selling guns. They got mixed in their inventory, and missed the markdowns. When the new manager came in, she did a thorough inventory, and discovered these needed to go, and I was more than willing to take them.

When they went to box them up, the Mossberg needed to be broken down to fit in the box, because no gun can leave Walmart if it isn't in the box. Store Policy. This actually ends up being a good thing, because the screw on cap at the end of the magazine tube is cross threaded, and won't come loose. They will be sending it to the Mossberg Service center to fix the broken part, AND address the rust, and when the repaired gun comes back, it's still mine for $50.

My pics will follow, but from Winchester's site, here is the 1300 12 gauge:

and the 1300 Compact 20 gauge:

Will post my pics when I get them back.

Good buys. I carry an old Winchester 1200 12 gauge under the seat of my Silverado. It has always been reliable and a good piece. I have had the gun for about 6 years now and not a trouble one.

The 870 Remington is probably a better pump-gun, but I got my 1200 about as cheap as you did the 1300 so I can't complain.

I've shot the 870 before, and it's very similar to the 1300, as far as I can tell. Breaking the Winchesters down was simple, and it blows me away how few parts there are.

I figure the Mossberg will be my $50 truck gun, if it proves reliable.
