Off to visit a range I may join.. wish me luck and pray it doesn't rain on me!
Well there's a shooting range probably 20 miles from me, one of the perks of it is it has a 600 yard rifle range, among a 100 yard range, a pistol range, and I think a shotgun range. It's $120 a year to join the club.. plus an initial $120 induction fee. You can go to the range anytime during the daylight hours.. you can bring a spouse and children for free, I can even bring my girlfriend for free. You can bring up to 3 guests for $5 a person.
I found a guy on the nebraska ccw site who has a membership to the range. He's taking me on as a guest today so I can try the range out before I decide on a membership. I'm almost positive I'm getting one. So I'm gonna go down there and shoot a bit today. Lets hope it doesn't rain! It's moving up from the south, I just hope it moves slow enough to hit here sometime after noon. gotta meet up with him at 10am, it's 8:30am here now. Anyways wish me luck for keeping the rain away! will give a report of the range when I return. |

Good luck, man. Hope all goes well. I'd love to have a range like that close to me...

120$ is better than the 175$ a year here. I will be glad to shoot at a 600 yard range!

Anyways it started raining toward the end, just a slight rain but that was OK. we were at the pistol range and were covered anyways so it didn't matter. Well, my day started out crappy in a way. I have been trying to find a recoil pad to fit my dads remington 300 win mag. none of them fit good that I've tried. So i tried to find one today on my way out, no luck. so I didn't get to shoot that which sucked. Anyways I have one of those targets that has the 3 metal circles, 2 hanging down and one up high in the center that you shoot to knock the others back down. I couldn't freakin hit it for the life of me at 100 yards! Last time I shot with my scope on the rifle it was dead on. I don't recall messing with my scope.. maybe I did.. who knows. But I was way off. Eventually got it back on target after wasting probably 40 rounds of ammo.. yes.. it was that far off. I was then able to hit them almost every single time. So I move out to try the metal plate they have at 200 yards. I hit it first try. I move to the 300 yard one, I hit it first try.. just held crosshairs slightly higher than normal. I then decided I wanted to try the metal plates that are about 550 yards out. Mind you, the furthest I had ever shot a rifle up until today was 100 yards. I just tried to remember how much drop my ammo was suppose to have around 500 yards. then I tried to quickly figure out in my head how many mil-dots I needed to move up to be able to hit it. I couldn't figure it out easily, so I guessed holding over target 2 mil-dots would be good. First shot.. wait.. wait.. wait.. clink.. hit. I was happy. I do it again.. and hit it. This steel plate I was shooting was probably 3 ft across. So I move to the other one off to the left which is probably 2 ft wide. I fire.. wait.. wait.. more of a gong sounding clink this time with that plate. hit it. I really wish I would have been able to shoot the 300 win mag.. that would have really made a good smack on the targets.. approximately 1400 ft lbs of energy at 500 yards, vs 220 ft lbs of energy with my AR15 lol. just a TAD bit of difference, wouldn't ya say? Regardless, it was really fun shooting at that distance and actually hitting the target.. and hearing it. so much more fun than looking through a scope to find bullet holes in paper. Granted, if I wanted to do precision shooting then hearing noise from the round hitting metal doesn't matter.. but you just don't get the enjoyment from hitting paper, like you do when you hear it hit metal. So we finished up at the rifle range.. I think I had shot probably 90 rounds.. more than I wanted, but that's ok. We moved to the pistol range. Setup my metal target at about 25 yards. I have my XD40.. the guy I'm shooting with has a glock.. not sure which model but he had a barrel for 9mm, 40 s&w and .357 sig. We were both shooting at the target... I will proudly say that I hit it way more times! I won't bad mouth his shooting.. I don't know how often he shoots handguns. I think he was suffering from a bit of flinch today because I kept seeing rounds impact in front of the target a few feet once in a while. But when I missed, I just barely missed. Otherwise I bet I was hitting the target probably 60% of the time, so I was quite happy. I hadn't shot my xd40 in probably 1 1/2 months.. I was worried I'd be flinching a bit for a while.. but that didn't happen. So overall it was a great day.. I think I am definitely going to get a membership to this range. Having metal plates setup at different ranges, where you don't have to go out and set stuff up yourself, don't need to worry about bringing your own targets all the time... able to switch between the different distance targets right away.. is a nice thing. I left my camera in the car.. I took a pic or two of the 600 yard range. will have to put the pic on here later today when I go get the camera. |

And to join the range, they have meetings every so often that you have to attend.. they are new member meetings.. you have to show proof of a recent background check, proof that you are a current NRA member. The next meeting is April 16th. The next one after that, is June 18th. I plan on going to the April 16th one. Just remember, it's $120 for an induction fee... then if you joined in April it'd be $60 for the membership fee. Their membership year runs from Oct 1, to Sept 30. So I'm only doing a membership for a half year at this point in the year. Come Oct 1 I will have to pay a full year. And at any time if you let your membership expire, you have to pay the induction fee again. |
