Lightbulb Take pics of your stuff for insurance purposes

I got a digital camera a few weeks back and decided to put it to some good use. I posted this on another forum I frequent.

What I am hoping to have time to do this weekend is to take pics of all of my firearms with a piece of paper that tells exactly what it is (Caliber, manufacturer, ser. num., etc.). Then you can take the pics and burn them onto a cd, or 5, and keep copies offsite of your house in case your firearms are ever stolen or you have a house fire. A bank box, work computer, family, you get the idea. I was enlightened to the fact that you could just take the eimages and put them into a power point presentation with descriptions of all the firearms.

Just tryin' to help out my fellow gun owners.

Great idea! I have pictures of everything of value I own cross-referenced with a spreadsheet showing date of purchase, serial number, retail value at time of purchase, etc. I have the Excel sheets and the pics burned to multiple cd's. I keep two cd's in my fireproof safe, my parents have one, my in-laws have one and my brother has one. I also have a spare memory card with all the pictures backed up. It took a while and most people might think it's overkill, but if I ever need it for insurance purposes it will reduce headaches.

You can always store them online at hosting sites such as photobucket as well. I do the same thing with all my "possessions".

Yep, I do similar stuff with my valuable goods (laptop, car stereo components, XD, trumpets, etc.). I also keep a list of all the serial numbers of said goods in my wallet and in the family lockbox. Burning pictures to a CD and keeping it in the lockbox as well doesn't sound like a bad idea. I also keep the pictures and the word document with the S/N's backed up on my private folder on the school's server.

Yep, I have a safe-deposit box with a few CDs full of photos of my stuff, important family photos, scanned receipts and financial documents, serial number info, and so on. I figure a safe-deposit box is going to have the best security and fire-suppression of any off-site location.

Thumbs up

I'm actually glad to see that this is not some ground breaking info. I never had many valuables until the last year or so, so I never gave it another thought.

This applies to more than just our guns too. Great advice guys.

Same here...plus I photograph each room in the house. Including tools in the garage. I hate insurance companies; if and when the time arrives for documentation of my stuff, I'll have it on file. CYA!

I have two copies of my firearms list complete with pics, serial numbers and descriptions. I keep the lists in separate locations.

Does your home insurance cover you guns? Or do you have a separate policy?

I just did a review of my home owner's policy a week or so ago. It covers a small number. I guess that means less than a dozen (?????). She suggested that I get a rider if I start getting more firearms, or if I start getting collectibles, or something of more significant value. As of right now, I don't have much worry for any of those. Just a simple man of meager means.

I will post a link to a place that insures game mounts. I just thought of that. Be back in a minute.
