chainsaw experts!

Alright I need some expert chainsaw help. I bought a Remington electric chainsaw. Yes I know electric but lets face it I'm likely to need a chainsaw about ten times for the rest of my life living in the darn desert. I used it to cut down a dead palm tree and as far as I know it worked fine. It did however leak a little chain oil.

I loaned it to my brother-in-law (you can see it coming can't you?). Now it doesn't seem to be lubing the chain. I've taken the chain and bar off and cleaned it several times and I can't seem to get it to work. I tried to get lowes to exchange it for me but being it was more than 30 days ago and no receipt they couldn't. Now before every gets all excited it leaked from the beginning so IMHO it was fair game for an exchange. Either way doesn't matter because they wouldn't.

So long story not short I have two questions.

#1 any idea what I can do to get this cheap POS to lube correctly?

and

#2 can I just take the chain off and goop it up with either some lubriplate (have a big jar for the guns) or some axle grease. I'm not sure what temps either are rated for or what is needed. I've got a tree that died on the side of my house that I was trying to coax into a healthy existence since we bought the place. The freezing this winter finished it off. I'd like to take it down before the temps get above 100 this summer! It would be great if I could get it to live long enough to get rid of that tree!

pour all the bar oil out, find some SeaFoam. Remove the bar, chain, and the cover over the oiler. Pour some seafoam into the oil tank, replace cap. Shake well, and pour out seafoam. Refill with seafoam, and allow to sit for a day or three. This stuff will eat up any gunk in it's path, assuming it can get to it. Also brush off anything in the way around the oiling hole, and if you can, pour some seafoam over the hole, and let it sit, but not both of them at the same time. Let gravity do the work.

Here's a little checklist:
http://www.choppingchainsaws.com/chainoilsystem.htm

I wouldn't recommend axle grease or any other grease for that matter. The chain bar needs a constant supply of fluid oil, not just a coating of grease. When the chain starts going through a tree or log, there goes your coat of grease and the heat from friction has just ruined your chain.

Hope this helps.

Is it an automatic luber or do you have to hit the squeeze bulb? Perhaps the outflow tubing has failed/fallen out. Check out the parts schematic in the appropriate manual at http://www.remingtonchainsaw.com/chainsaw.html

......This would be one of those RTFM moments! So they aren't all automatic then? so... from looking at similar chainsaws from the site listed it looks like it is probably a manual.

I tried hitting the bulb a couple times and running the saw. It looks like it ran a little better but with the the oil its looking it could be just residue. So this weekend I'll take the bar and chain back off clean it up one more time and see what happens.

thanks for all the help guys.

In a pinch, which is what you are in, you could get one of the squirt cans, put some oil in it, and then squirt it every 5 seconds or so as you are cutting. With the older manual ones we would pump about that often, depending on how hard the wood is. Either way, it could get you by.

Also, keep that chain sharp, as that will help a lot.
