I'm glad I learned gun safety

Yesterday at the range I was giving a freind tips on shooting. We were handing his gun back and fort, dry firing it. After a few minutes, I picked up my gun, which had no clip in it. I began to go through the whole spill again of how "I SHOOT" but before pulling the trigger, instincts made me pull the slide back and I'll be damned if a bullet didn't fall out. I thought the gun was empty as I picked it up off the table w/ no clip in it. I am so, so thankful that I checked.

Anyone have a similar story?

When i lived in Wisconsin, I had my Kalash laying in the back seat of the car and the magazine was out. My gf reached for it to mess around and thank goodness i snatched away from her and cheked it cuz there was a round still in it for some stupid reason.

Next time, don't put the gun down unless the action is open.

Excellent advice D_Fence. I know that all the ranges I shoot at require all of the actions to be open once they call a cease fire prior to walking down the line to replace targets

The gun is always loaded. Just remember that and you'll be A-OK.

Next time leave the 'clips' at home and bring your magazines instead...

Right - that's why there are multiple safety lessons. I follow the big "3":

The gun is always loaded

Know your target and what's behind it

Finger off the trigger until ready to fire

There are lots of versions of these 3, and everyone above brought up good points as well. Some guns won't lock open (most AK's, for example), so there have to be redundant rules to offer safety backups and backup backups.
