I've found that MPro7 works very well on wood parts (but it might attack some types of varnishes) and pretty well on metal parts. Casey Birch gun scrubber aerosol is, I think, basically just a brake cleaner, and it works very well on metal parts.

I heard that WD40 works wonders on cosmoline.

I applied for a C&R license, should be getting here soon.

I'm guessing I'll be intimitely familiar with the cosmo removal process on some of the Yugo's I plan to buy.

Cleaning Cosmoline Off

When I Was In The Military During The 1960"s We Cleaned It Off The Guns Like This, Mixture Of Half Gas And Half Diesel Fuel And A Sash Brush This Stuff Cleans It Off Nicely And Just Wipe Down And Air Dry The Guns, We Even Used Jet Fuel Because It Was Widley Available To The Troops At That Time, But In Today's High Gas And Deisel Prices I Am Sure Kerosine Would Work Just As Good

Why are we talking about Cosmo on an XD forum?

I use Breakfree and a terry cloth rag on the metal parts of surplus rifles and it works just fine. Getting cosmo out of wood is a different story. You probably ought to go over to surplusrifleforum.com for an extensive answer to your question.

Brake or Carb fluid cleaner as one of the other guys stated. I did that at first with my brand new issue Sig Sauer .40 DAK. Takes that crap right off. I have gotten very few guns that actually have Cosmoline on it. It is is like valesine's evil cousin...

I've heard that just soaking the parts in carbonated water and scrubbing with a soft brush works really well, but I've never tried it.

edit:
But the easiest thing would be to just send it to me

This thread is so old, it might qualify for C&R status and may in fact be covered in Cosmoline.
