Question Fire Safe vs. Gun Safe

I just bought a clearance model Sentry Safe - FireSafe with water protection from target (half off) . It is a digital safe rated for 1 hour burn and 30' fall while heated to 1550F. I decided to actually read the directions and general info they provided and was stunned to see a disclaimer for contents: not intended to secure firearms, weapons or prescription medicine! I tried to call the company and ask if it was due to the water tight aspect (potential for increased moisture level), lawsuit or their way of pushing their line of $$$ gun safes: no answer for thirty minutes Who has an opinion?

I'll keep it either way because of the discount.

its better than nothing. i have one too. i lock it when im out and keep it unlocked when im at home. i keep it clean and wipe it down with a silicone rag.

i'll be getting a gun safe since those have predrilled holes and the price at one of the stores is not at all that bad. one the size of an old 16in crt monitor (the box kind) is around $70. and one that is the same size im using now cost between $30-$55.

im thinking about getting a small one so i can bolt that in the trunk of my car. and a larger one for home.

I believe this may be because a firearm (more importantly the ammunition) could discharge in the safe and negate the fire and water proof aspects of the safe.

IF its one of the smaller safes, around maybe 1 foot by 1 foot or so, then its because of the fire retardent material they use contains moisture and will lead to rust. I have a small blue one I got from Target but use it for documents. From what I have read is that the fire proofing material has a high moisture content, hence the fire proofing, and will lead to rust.

+1 on the C.Y.A.

It sounds like C.Y.A. speak... I'm sure for the price of a custom built safe they'd sell you a model that was intended for securing of firearms, narcotics, and valuable items.

I do. Opinions are like you know what. Everybody has one.

In a firesafe of that type, the fireproof materials hold moisture which is cooked off in a fire to protect the contents. It also casues higher than normal humidity levels inside the safe most of the time, unless the safe is specifically designed to keep that moisture out of the interior (such as a true purpose built gun safe).

Keep the guns/ammo in zip lock bags with silica gel packs in the bags in the safe and you are good to go.

the walls of most fire safes are filled with a very high mostiure content and guns will rust alot faster in there then everywhere else. also they dont have screw holes to prevent them from getting stolen so all you have is a really convient carring case for your vauables that the theif can just walk out with

I also have one. They do have holes for bolting (kind of) they are sealed recesses in the bottom fo the safe you can put a Lag bolt through. However if you look at the locking mechanism it is easily defeated. It a light plastic latch that can be broken quite easily.
