Here are some things to help you feel more confident:

http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/conline/pubs/.../prescreen.htm

http://www.fraudguides.com/consumer_optoutprescreen.asp

Now, some people claim to not see that much of an effect. It won't stop solicitations from business with hom you already deal (i.e., home equity loans from your bank). So, if you have lots of dealings with different businesses you will still get some junk. You'll still get those coupon flyers and crap like that. I registered nearly 5 years ago and noticed a difference within a month or two.

Yes, the web site is not a fraud. Feel free to do some more research, as I am sure there are con men out there with similair fishing schemes.

The credit pre-screening opt-out does reduce the junk mail quite a bit.

Other tips to reduce your junk mail:

Ask for people you do business with not to share your name. Magazines, catalogues, mail-order companies normally share you name unless you tell them otherwise. If I find that a company shares my name after I ask I stop doing business with them. I will never buy anything again from Dillon just for this reason.

Ask the people that send you crap you dont want to stop and not share your name. I will ask nicely two times, after that I will fill out USPS Form 1500, Application for Listing and/or Prohibitory Order (this form is like using nukes - do it sparingly)

Get your name off direct marketing lists. More info here

I had my mail down to a trickle until I got married.

It's legit. Both the credit reporting agency TransUnion and The Federal Trade Commission's websites link directly to the site.

http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/conline/pubs/.../prescreen.htm

Forum chatter about the website.

If in doubt call the phone number.

You can wrap a brick and attach the return postage part of the envelope to it. That way they have to pay the postage.

i would say this is a good idea to try and get junk mail reduced, but i like the idea of sending things back to them in their envelopes. why? job security for the men and women of the US postal service.

Actually, they put a stop to that by making a weight limit on business return envelopes.

Just use Mastercards prepaid return envelopes and send Visa's credit card offers, and vise versa.
