Was the case inside the suitcase both times?
I've had it done both ways. But typically they put it inside the case if you are checking the case and outside the case if the case is inside a checked bag.

I think it's a matter of not many people check guns so the agents aren't very consistant in their actions.

Like I've said, I had once where the tag was on the outside of the case when I checked just the case, so it was on the baggage claim with this big firearms label for all to see. The TSA or FAA doesnt allow firearms to be labeled like that anymore.. I think that was delta that did that too.

good thread read.
would it speed up checking the weapon if you left the gun field stripped in the pelican case?
having the slide, barel and spring/rod all sitting in the case to be reassembled at your hotel later?

cheers

BoomerBSG -- you just have to show the ticket counter guy/girl and the TSA guy that the gun is unloaded. I put the cable lock that came with the gun through it before going to the airport, so I just held it up and that was all I had to do. So if you had it disassembled, the most time you'll save is the amount of time it takes to pull back the slide and show its not loaded
