That would scare me if it was my house and I would have to think twice about where and when my little ones played outside. But it is a beautiful animal.

Mountain lions are getting more populous in the northern plains. While they are still fairly rare and are mostly confined to the more rural areas, you should definately be alert. And they have attacked, killed and occasionally eaten humans.

Saying that the mountain lion in the picture was probably just hungry is a decent assumption. He probably felt a dog, cat or child would be easier to kill than the deer that are all over MI.

So, no need to worry.

That is cool but it would scare the s**t out of me. But he will get the stray animals down.

It would freak me out to see a big cat like that outside my door (especially in Delaware), but what do we really expect? We (humans) keep destroying the wildlife's natural habitats and feeding grounds to make way for more houses and malls. So we're in actuality forcing them to come closer and closer to our own homes for food. We're just bringing the fight to our own doorsteps, literally.

Now don't get me wrong. If I saw a huge cat like that outside my house, I'd freak out and get the shotgun ready. And if I lived in an area where such predators lived, I'd keep a CLOSE eye out while my kids played outside, and I wouldn't hesitate to shoot me a big cat if it got too close to my kids.

But at the same time we have to ask ourselves SERIOUSLY and honestly: *WHY* do we think these larger predators are increasingly coming into towns, and right up to our doors?? Hmmm... I wonder..... maybe because we're giving them no other choice?

That is a beautiful cat. It's just probably hungry, but it still would kind of freak me out seeing it so close to my house.

I got to see some great wildlife this past four days as I took a trip from Nebraska to Helena MT.

Saw some great buffalo, deer and a beautiful coyote next to the highway.
Got to say the country up there is a bit more beautiful than good ole nebraska.

Kind of shocked me though that they had allot less snow in most parts than we had here in Omaha.

Wow. Not a lot of people get to see something like that in their lifetime. When I was a kid we had one scream in the middle of the night right by our bedroom window - boy, was that scarry for a little kid! We also had a bear get into our trash that same summer. That was in rural Washington about 15 years ago.

national geographic channel had a great show on "couger island" I think it was in BC.

Yes the cat was probably hungry. The problem is most people think we are at the top of the food chain. tools are the only thing that makes us so.

The basics of the show was anything small and/or moving away from them at a decent rate will probably trigger them.

IMHO its the same thing as great whites. People try so hard now to get everyone to think that "they are not just mindless killing machines". So true. However give them the respect they deserve. Without our tools they are at the top of the food chain as far as we are concerned. This cat obviously felt it was worth the risk coming that close to this house. Why wouldn't he come back?

I have to comment on this one. You don't have to shoot the cat. Just scare the crap out of it. Just pop of a round and it will run. All the wildlife is getting used to people not being a threat. In Eddy county NM mounten lions are all over the place.
