I doubt he would be any problem unless you had kids out in the back yard, in which case you should be watching your brats. If he was on my deck, there would be no point to shooting him. He isn't hurting anything.

still scary though, if you have older kids that arent supervised or even young kids that are it wouldnt be hard for that thing to sneak up and make his move..........i would call fish and game and see if i could get it relocated and if that wasnt possible, next time it was around it might be the last.

We had one sleeping on the second story porch of a motel in Carson City a few years back.
Animal Control tranq'ed him and drove him out into the desert..........
Then let him go.
While I've never actually run into one, hiking in the mountains here, they ARE out there. Mostly they stay well away from humans, though.

We have a family friend who hunts Mt. lions, and because we can't use dogs or bait in OR, the only way to hunt is to use a 3-D deer and have the lion try to stalk it. Our friend has killed well over a dozen lions using this method. He sits up in a tree and waits with 00 buck in his shot gun. The amazing thing about the lions is they are so fast and steathly that he has never heard or seen a lion until after they have attacked the 3-D deer. So, I say if you see the animal then shoot it, because they are getting over populated and it doesn't matter how well you watch your "Brat" (for the lack of a better term) the lion will have attacked before you can reach for your gun. They are dangerous animals and are seen only when they want to be.

Hmmm... I saw the same photos on another bulletin board claiming they were taken in IOWA. Is this a "rural legend"?

I like the story for this one more because it has an actual town's name. Town names always make stories more believable, and not just like "New York" or Los Angeles". A small town name that I have to Mapquest to find it.

My younger brother told me yesterday of an incident that occurred probably 15yrs ago in Oxnard, Ca. He was on a hiking trail (not the one most people went on), when he saw a mountain lion approaching him about 150' away. Evidently the lion had smelled him or seen him at that point.

As the lion got closer, he became aware of him. My brother said he recalled reading that you should put your arms over your head to appear bigger and maybe scare him off. He did and the lion turned around and walked away.

My brother said he decided to walk on the more populated trail for the remainder of his hike.

BTW, he wasn't armed (Ca. you know).

No need to shoot it, he's probably just looking for food. It's not like he's gonna pick your lock and hunt you down inside your home.

Here's how I would approach this situation:

1) Glance at my beer, and wonder how many I'd really had.
2) Upon realization it was my first beer, set it down.
3) Go change my drawers.
4) Call animal control.
5) Change my drawers...again.
6) Grab a gun, just in case.

That is a pretty cat. I too am glad that the Mountain Lion and Grey Wolf are making their way back. Balance is key in life.
