Someone used my SSN to get free medical care at Duke and I got the bill. They went to the emergency room for a toothache and I got a bill for $1,200. It took a lot of diligence and calls to Duke before I got it resolved. Duke flagged the account so if the scumbag tries to go back, they'll be busted.

Definitely sign up for credit watch through a credit company (Experian, Transunion) and they will notify the other bureaus.

Well, we're getting it figured out slowly but surely. Closed all our current accounts and have set up new, un-linked accounts. He some how made his own checks and debit card and used them no problem with y=our account numbers. We're going to both run our credit reports and sign up for an identity monitor of some sort just to be sure.

Its kinda sort of out of our hands and up to the bank. We have gotten one transaction back so far. Its only a temp. authorization until we sign the afidavit. I thank you all for your concern and advise.

The process is this at my bank, we are a top 10 in the nation size bank, the theft happens, you have to come in or call, better to come in to go over your transactions, the banker will call in the information to the theft/fraud department with the appropriate transactions. They will form the affadavits and will email them to the bank (fastest) or you (better to send to the banker, the filters already allow it or mail them. Once you get them, you go throught, verify, fill out a few places, sign, get notarized (we are notary's at the bank) we then fax the information to the dept mentioned above. Then it is out of the branch banks hands. We can call and find out, but we don't really do anything else. That department will typically give what is called a provisional credit. That means, while they are doing the investigation, you at least have access to the money you lost. If everything comes out ok, meaning that you are not the crook and went a shopping spree and trying to get money back, then they will close the case and life gets back to normal. We use Visa on our debit cards so you will get 100% of the money back. Oh, if you get a NSF or OD fee because of the theft, make sure you get those back, you shouldn't have to but make sure you do. Oh, if you are lying or stealing, then they will take that money back. I have seen it where nothing was obvious and no provisional credit was given until the investigation was done.

Usually when a theft occurs, there are obvious charges and activity that show something ain't right. Most people don't go to 4 gas stations spending $60 a pop between 11pm and 3am.

It is not always necessary to close down the account when lets say your debit card gets stolen or lost. That card number is unique and once you call it in, and cancel it, it is dead. If you lose your DL, SS# with your account number and checks, close that account.
