Hoppes makes it sort of expensive doesn't it? I recently did try the Poly Dunk-It and was pretty impressed. Has a very slight mothball odor as it does contain Naptha. If the odor of the mineral spirits in Ed's Red is objectionable you might go ahead and spend the money on the lanonlin (I'm assuming you didn't use it, I didn't). The lanolin helps reduce the odor and helps in reducing fingerprints on the finish.

Reviving an old thread, with a partly new question....

For those that have used ultrasonic cleaning, How does it work on carbon fouling, especially on nickel revolver cylinders? These can be a real PITA to get clean sometimes, especially those little .22s.

and what's the best solution for nickel?

10ring, it does well with carbon fouling. Be sure to not put too many items in the bath at once--that can hurt its performance.

brandon, the heating unit helps, but it's not necessary. I'm guessing a 1pt capacity is too small. When you find one that has a bin that can actually fit your slide (enough length) you'll be into multiple quarts or liters. Internal tub dimensions are key. A basket helps too. Bought mine on eBay--works fine, but wasn't cheap.
