A few days after Thanksgiving, the doorbell rang. I answered it and there was a boy around 12-13 saying he got locked out next door and needed to use the bathroom. He doesn't live next door but was Hispanic (same as the familly in the house he pointed to) and it was the holiday weekend so I figured he was just visiting familly. He seemed pretty freaked out by our dogs that go nuts anytime the doorbell rings.

I let him in dispite the fact that my hife was freaking out. She doesn't even like me answering the door if I don't know the person and she certainly didn't like me letting a stranger in. I showed him to our basement bathroom in case he was up to something (less places to go in the house and nice things to see down there). To help my wife feel better and because she was getting me freaked out, I got the XD and hid it in my wasteband under my shirt. I went downstairs and made myself look busy near the bathroom messing with some golf clubs. He finished and left. I looked through the bathroom to make sure he didn't stash anything. A little later, I took a spin arround the block to see if he was really waiting at that house for someone to get home, and he was.

I basically figured I should be more careful but that my wife was overreacting because all went well and his story pretty well checked out. This morning on the local news they said the police were looking for a woman who has performed a string of robberies in town where she asks to use the bathroom then comes out with a knife and robs the people who were nice enough to share thier crapper. Honestly, I doubt I would have let a grown woman in as readilly but it makes me realize how close I really could have been to drawing on someone. Depending on if she comes out showing the blade or waits till she is close, drawing could easily have become shooting. Kind of scary stuff.

I thought this was going to be a story about the black-eyed kids that supposedly show up asking to be let in but can't come in until you invite them. They say that when you look into their eyes you're so overcome with terror that you can't resist their requests.

Seriously though, you're right.. it's a good eye opener for those that might unsuspectingly let someone in.
