What a bunch of dumbasses. The guy said he'd shoot the dogs, and that he had a gun. Why didn't they beanbag or rubber bullet him?? Screw the perp, but the cops should be punished for killing the dog through gross neglegance. In my opinion, they escalated the situation.......

Thats too bad, mistake indeed.
If you listen carefully you can hear, what seems to be the handler, yelling at his fellow officers for shooting when his dog was there. Warning, that is a pretty graphic video for dog lovers. |

I'm no LEO, but I'm going to guess that if there was any situation where "less lethal" force probably would have de-escalated the situation, that was it.
Is it the norm to send a police dog in on an armed suspect?

I'm not even sure what happened. They started shooting then the dog was let loose?
At any rate the guy threw his gun to the ground instantly.

I think Nightraider is right. I've seen this video elsewhere and the audio matched up a little better.
The real tragedy isn't that the police fired premptively (or accidentally or whatever) it's that the dog was hit in the crossfire. Not to make light of it but I think those officer's need to requalify. If they were actually aiming at the perp the dog might very well be alive. The perp can be summed up in one word: fool

i saw this video a few weeks ago. If you ask me, the cops involved here messed up big time. Since when do you start open firing on a suspect who has a gun, but obviously has it hidden in a corner like he has, not pointed at someone? I'm not saying this suspect wasn't a bad guy, or didn't have a gun and couldn't have threatened the cops. But in the video, clearly he wasn't pointing the gun at anyone, and was not doing anything except just sitting there saying stuff.
Now because of their stupidity, a person is dead and so is their dog. I think they need a little more training. |

I'm just going to go ahead and say what I really think.
The large majority of LEO's absolutely scare the crap out of me. I've met a few (out of hundreds) that have been decent, fair and mentally stable people but way too many that I have come across amaze me with their lack of law knowledge mixed with general crap attitude, power tripping arrogance. I KNOW I'm generalizing but in this case I just can't help it. I'm so sick and tired of hearing/seeing/personally witnessing all the crazy illegal things they get away with because of their standing. It's this type of stuff that blows me away...arent they TRAINED to handle situations like this properly? Apparently not, or not well enough. I know this won't make me popular with a couple people here but not everyone can like me all the time, right? I'm not saying the "bad guy" was right but the LEO definitely screwed the pooch on this one...pun intended. I feel horrible for that dog. I feel bad for the idiot that got shot too....or at least for his family. This may very well have been avoided with a little negotiating and verbal skills on the LEO's part.
