Thumbs up Pics of random stuff

10/29/2006 - Arachnophobia
This is for all of the manly men whose job it is to squash the bugs for the screaming, pointing wife. Especially the ones who go inside afterwards and shiver alone in a corner, secretly wallowing in their hidden fear of all things 6 and 8-legged....

I've seen two of these... No idea what kind of spider it is... Probably a Wolf spider... But anyway...

Minding my own business on my back porch, probably feeding my venus flytrap at night... And voila, we have this:

That, by the way, is a spider. Next to it is the thick aluminum leg of my ratty-ass lawn chair, as a size comparison. Not a man-eating jungle spider, but certainly creepy and big to someone with "the fear"... Oh, but wait...

Ewwwwwww! An EGGSACK! Wait, is it? What's with all the shiny spots of light on it? Poke-poke-poke...

Oh CRAP! It's actual BAAAAAABIESSSSSS! Hundreds of little baby spiders clinging to momma. And all those little tiny points of light from the flash are their cold dark eyes staring back at me. Let's go back to momma...

Isn't she beautiful? Such a smile...

I didn't kill it, as I don't make a habit of killing spiders. After all, I'd rather have one spider than the thousands of bugs it'll eat in its lifetime. Though, my neighbor supposedly stomped one once, and jettisoned hundreds of baby spiders around who proceeded to cling to and climb on everything they could to escape. Including him. He ran inside screaming and swatting at his legs. Or so he says. I think he's lying, and probably left out the part about wetting his pants...

In any case... a cool spider... and a worthy addition to my once-popular "weird animals and insects" series.

Photos of problems...

10/29/2006 - XD40-V10 Locking Block
I don't know how many rounds it has been... a lot, certainly... but after so many rounds (and 2 sets of springs), I'm finally encountering that whole "locking block beat to hell" issue. Soooooo... I got pics. Mine didn't crack. It's funny, actually... I was looking reaaaaaaaaaally closely for cracks, doing the whole "apply oil and squeeze together" technique. Didn't see anything. Until one day while cleaning, As I dragged my cleaning patch around on the guts, off flaked (yes, flaked) a piece of the locking block. See for yourself. There's a chunk missing on the top side and on the bottom side. The end of the locking block had always been slowly curling up to form that little wire-like edge of impacted metal... And then this!

I haven't yet contacted Springfield... I just now got another cable for my freakish camera. Actually, no... I got a card reader. But that's another story.

P.S., since this is the first photo-post since the BB change over... Are those photos too big for the format of the page? It doesn't feel like the old thread. :-/

12/19/2004 - Guns and Fun, A Trip To the Range
[Video]
Most of the guys here have seen this. No, it's not instructional. No, we don't think we're bad asses. This was put together specifically to show people what "having fun at the range" consists of. And before you go off the deep-end about how horribly unsafe all of this was... Guess what. As the camera man, I didn't want to be shot. So if it looks like I have a loaded gun pointed at me..... I don't. Anyway!

Glad to hear it's coming back, even if it's not in it's old format.

Where the hell ya been anyway Overkill? When I first joined it seemed like you lived here, but I haven't "seen" you around in a while.

I work now. And the forum has gotten soooooooooo bigggggggggggg that I can't read every post like I used to. By the time I DO read a post, most of the useful information has already been desiminated. De-semen-ate-it? Er. You know the word I mean.

Good size on the pictures, not too large and obnoxious, and thanks for the nightmares I will be having to live with from my wife seeing those spider pictures. She will wake me up at 2 a.m. to kill a spider.

That's a nice camera you have to be taking a picture of the mom's face like that. How long did she survive after the photo shoot was done?

Tec, it's almost Halloween, after all.
jonny, I don't know. I didn't kill her, and she was gone the next morning, so I'd like to think she's still alive! As for her babies... I may have eaten some in my sleep. I hear that happens a lot.
OC4U, how flattering. I've always liked spiders. They're scary looking as hell (especially when you get in up close), but (most) of their webs are so awesome. They're triumphs of evolution (or really intelligent design, take your pick) and really fascinating, especially if you find an active one in a web that you can throw moths to and watch it shrink-wrap them for later. On that note... I was feeding a black widow june bugs... and I'd watch it run up, take a bite, and wrap it up, the june bug wriggling all the while. Came out the next morning, most of the june bugs were gone, but the couple that remained were still wrapped up and still squirming. I guess June Bugs wear kevlar or something.
