This has been posted here before my KOL, but I've seen it all over the net, including Glocktalk and so on.

That is crazy how the barrel peeled like that. Bet that was a scary incident for the shooter.

After watching Mythbusters Episode 43 with "Finger in a Barrel" I think that this is not possible... they could not replicate the problem not once and they even welded a spike into the end of the barrel...
Here are the tests they performed Finger in a Barrel Cartoon Myth: If you stick your finger in the barrel of a gun, the gun will explode. The shooter will be injured but you will be fine. There was a great cartoon done for this myth that featured reinterpretations of Adam's "Am I missing an eyebrow?" quote and Jamie's "Quack, damn you" quote. Setup
Kari: "Can we get Grant out of this mold? The Tests Test 1 (gel hand): Buster's gel finger was stuck inside the shotgun barrel. The entire hand was blown apart with no damage to the shotgun. Test 2 (wax hand): They used a stronger ballistic hand made of wax to plug the barrel. The wax hand was blown apart but the shotgun barrel was ballooned slightly. At this point they declared the myth busted and moved on to trying to replicate the myth. They wanted to get a 'banana peel' result by firing the shotgun. Test 3 (dirt): Tory stuffed the barrel of a shotgun with dirt. The end of the barrel peeled back slightly, but the shooter was fine. Test 4 (Steel spike): They welded a steel spike into the barrel. The gun shot the spike out with only minor damage to the end of the barrel. Test 5 (squib load): A squib load is a bullet that doesn't have enough gunpowder to exit the barrel. Jamie hammered a bullet into the end of the barrel. The end of the barrel bulged, but it didn't banana peel. Not only was this myth busted, but MythBusters failed at even replicating the result of this myth. mythbusted While it was cool that they ballooned the end of the barrel, it didn't explode, the hand was blown apart, and the shooter was safe.

Mythbusters used a shotgun, not a high powered rifle cartridge.
Here is a link about the sotry behind it. It has more pics, and if you click the underlined what it shows you what did it. It was a boresighting tool that was still attached. I think if it were a semiauto it would have ended differntly, but whith a bolt gun where can the preassure go? Last edited by Timmy44221 : 10-26-2006 at 07:57 AM. |

I agree Timmy44221, Mythbuster used a shotgun. The 12 gauge shotgun has a max chamber pressure of 11,000psi for the 2.75 and 3 inch 12 gauge. Even the 3.5 inch 12 gauge only goes to 14,000psi. Most rifles are in excess of 50,000psi and many go over 60,000psi. Had they done it will a rifle they would have gotten similar result to the forgotten bore sighter.

I'm more inclined to say it isn't real as well. It looks a little too clean cut to me.

Right, because a lot of people spend their time destroying their perfectly good hunting rifles in order to get some sort of a rise out of internet forum members.
