Thumbs down Flags of our Fathers

Save your money and rent it.

I was so jazzed to see this movie only to find out that it is a crappy movie dotted by (not enough) cool war scenes. A total disappointment.

Overall how was it...was it fairly accurate or liberalized by HollyWierd?

I still refuse to watch Jarhead, just from the stuff I heard others say about it

The whole movie was about the raising the flag photo and war bonds. It was fairly accurate as I understand it, but not a good movie.

Flags of Our Fathers left this reviewer...cold.

I got the book at costco a week or so ago. I have a habbit of collecting really good books I don't get around to. It will be a while before I get to this one. I'm on an early pre-american history kick currently.

I'm waiting to see how the movie actually plays out once it's been out a while.
I understand what it's supposed to be about, and the hype has you believe that it's a "gung ho" movie about how great our military is in time of war when they are severely tested.

HOWEVER, I harbor this "suspicion" that it's really a Leftist, Liberal, anti-war movie dressed up to look like something else.

I haven't seen it, so I can't say. I'm just sittin' here wondering...

The book wasn't really about the battle of Iwo Jima, sure, a lot of the book took place there, but it was more about how one photograph changed these people's lives and encouraged a nation at war.

James Bradley's second book (Flyboys) is even more interesting from a historical point of view if you can get past his gimmicky writing techniques and his secondary thesis of "When it came to atrocities in the Pacific the Americans really didn't have the moral high ground that we'd like to think." (I learned some things about what the USMC did in the Philippines early in the 20th century that made my head spin.)
The way the story is woven, including the how close George H.W. Bush came to being the subject of this book instead of President, is masterfully done.
I liked it much better than FooF which I haven't read for 5 years.

I'll be seeing it tonight so I'll chime in with what I think about it. I've been reading the book and so far its a great read.
