Yup, I think it may have actually been an HBO movie, but I remember seeing it in the early 90's late 80's. It was about a struggle with not only the commies but also between the captain and the crew when communication was lost from the US, infact its like an B-52 version of Crimson Tide.

I've never heard of The Beast either. Looks like it's time to go rent it.

"Rough Riders" - Tom Berenger, Sam Elliott, Gary Busey (Spanish Amer.)
"The Wild Geese" - Richard Burton, Roger Moore, Richard Harris (Mercenary)
"Von Ryan's Express" - Frank Sinatra, Trevor Howard (WWII)
"The Train" - Burt Lancaster (WWII)
"Pork Chop Hill" - Gregory Peck (Korean War)
"In Harm's Way" - John Wayne, Kirk Douglas (WWII)
"The Great Escape" - Steve McQueen, James Garner (WWII)
"Cromwell" - Richard Harris, Alec Guiness (English Civil War)
"The Devil's Brigade" - William Holden, Cliff Robertson, Vince Edwards (WWII)
"The Sand Pebbles" - Steve McQueen, Richard Crenna (Boxer Rebellion)
"We Were Soldiers" - Mel Gibson (Vietnam)
"They Were Expendable" - John Wayne, Robert Montgomery (WWII)
"Murphy's War" - Peter O'toole (WWII)
"A Bridge Too Far" - (WWII)
"To Hell and Back" - Audie Murphy (WWII)

And a great movie if you like comedy and guns combined -
"Secondhand Lions" - Michael Caine, Robert Duvall

Best : Saving Private Ryan

Worst: Windtalkers. It sucked out loud.

What was the name of the movie where the Aircraft Carrier USS Nimitz was magically transported back in time right before the Pearl Harbor attack? That one was good but I'm having a senior moment on the title....

Hmm, "Best" is a tough choice. My favorites are: Saving Private Ryan, We Were Soldiers (Excellent movie), Band of Brothers, and In Harm's Way. I really like the "Sharpe's" BBC series, though that is not, strictly speaking, a military show. But you do get to see a young Liz Hurley topless, so that makes up for a lot.

Worst: Anything from the 70's or 80's dealing with Vietnam. I HATE the movies that make our guys out to be psycho killers, some how we were the bad guys.

Oh, and anything with Nicolas Cage in it, even if it's not a war/military movie.

If anyone cares, the Sam's near me has Gods and Generals and Gettysburg each for $6.44. 8 hours of well done Civil War movies for $13. I couldn't pass it up.

Oh, and the movie about the Nimitz was "The Final Countdown".

It was a decent sci fi flick.
