That would not have solved anything.

I don't know many cops that enjoy shooting 13-year-old girls in the face, either.

I just dont understand peoples train of thought .... they always want to bad mouth an officer shooting someone but never want to address the reason the cop was called to the scene in the first place and the situation that forced the officer to draw his weapon.

All they can ever say is that the officer should not have shot the person.

I' know something about this case. The "girl" was a mental/drug case and had several run-ins with the city LE community (as well as just about every social service agency in the city).

Her mother called 911 because the daughter (all 185 lbs of her) was acting irrationally and was threatening her (she has repeatedly beat the mother up and been removed from the home in the past).

The LEO and his partner show up to try to calm the situition down - the "girl" starts screaming at them, runs into the kitchen and comes back with a 12" butcher knife. She's told to drop the knife. Instead, she runs at the male LEO, lunges at him several times (he's trying to avoid her) and, when she backs him up against a wall, he has no alternative but to shoot her.

Grounds for a law suite? In NY, sure thing. Hey, it's like the lottery -

Sounds like a another reason why all cops should carry TASERS. The cop did the right thing under the circumstances. It would be great if his partner had the TASER and he had the gun, that way, the proper use of force would have been used insteand of the only use of force. Can you carry TASERS in NY?

I godda disagree wit hthe taser idea. although they can be usefull, in this situation, I would have shot her. Think aobut it, you have your wife/daughter behind you and someone runs at you with an 8in knife? I dont know if I would even ask em to put it down before I shot. The cop did the right thing.

Another problem with tasers is that the person keeps their motion going until their muscles lock....a person with a knife can cover 25 feet in seven seconds...i'm sure she was much closer if she was lunging at him repeatedly. He's backed up against a wall with 185 lbs of dead weight and a knife falling at him and nowhere to go...at least a gunshot counters her force somewhat. Just my opinion tho

There were two officers on the scene, both with guns drawn. If one had a taser, the other with a gun, the situation would have ended differently.

The cop did the right thing and I would have done the same. That said, the reason for a taser is to stop the threat without the use of lethal force, since all cases like this means that municipality will be sued, the dirtbag will get money, the cop quits and gets divorced because s/he cannot handle the pressure and the tax pay flips the bill.

Only specially trained officers carry the taser in the City of Rochester. There are 14 of them and they must advise dispatch before they remove the taser from the car (must be kept in the car and only removed after dispatch has been notified). The dispatcher then sends an ambulance and EMT team to the scene.

Based on what I read and heard about this, it was "proper use of force" all the way. The LEO was in what he considered a life threatening position vs the "girl". He and his partner were responding to a 911 call placed by the family. His shot was a lottery ticket for these people and their lawyer.
