Anyone know anything about flags?
Specifically WWII-era German flags. I have been given a German Blood Flag, and woul like to know if it is authentic. I have been given the story that grandpa captured it and brought it back, yada yada. I am trying to figure out a little history behind it. Where or for what they used these flags on, etc. I am somewhat reluctant to drag a Nazi flag into an antique store. Even though I am not anti-semitic, I dang near feel like a criminal for owning it. Any help would be appreciated. I can email a picture to any experts that we may have.
Thanks

its called a Blutfahne which is blood flag, and there is only one. It was the flag that was recovered from the Munich Beer Hall Putsch. Nazi party members shot by police, some fell atop of it and was covered in his blood. Its design with the red field and white circle with the swazi in the middle was the symbol of the 5th SA Sturm (most other pre 1933 flags had a black back ground). Its a parade standard then and became the national flag design of Nazi Germany. Your best bet IS to take it to be authinticated because there are some serious fakes of lots of Nazi memrobilia out there because they bring big time bucks and not alot survived.
On all ceremonial parades and gatherings the Blutfahne was always borne by Jakob Grimminger. Jakob Grimminger was born on 25 April 1892. He served in the German Army during the Great War with sufficient distinction to be awarded the Imperial Iron Cross, 2nd Class. After the war [he] joined the Nazi Party and was an early member of the SS. He participated in the Munich Putsch of 9 November 1923. Later he was appointed to be the official bearer of the Blutfahne, and attained the rank of SS-Standartenführer; he was also appointed a Councillor for the City of Munich. He survived the Second World War and the period of post-war Allied occupation, after which, it is believed, he managed to obtain work as a street sweeper. Grimminger died in Munich in obscurity and poverty on 28 January 1969, at the age of seventy-seven. The last time it was seen was in 1944. Red background, white circle, black swazi, blood stains......

It looks real enough in the pic. The significance is that it was the nations flag. Not to be mean, but there is only one 'blood flag' and thats not it-just the style. You have a 'common' small garrison/battle flag that is strung to a pole. It should be made of wool and some ink stamps or a leather tag should still be somewhat visible somewhere on the backstrap for an early production. Later production was sewn cotton, and final production was 'stamped' cotton.
Take some better/closer photos and post at http://forum.axishistory.com/index.php or send photos to www.thirdreichdepot.com and see if theycan help you out.
