Duty to retreat only pertains to defending against an unlawful attack.
In states which dictate a duty to retreat, deadly force can only be used if you first attempt to retreat from the attack. Example: BG swings a baseball bat at you. You have a duty to try and run away before you can retaliate in any way, otherwise you are breaking the law.
In states without duty to retreat, you do not have to run away first. You can retaliate immediately if you feel your life is in danger.
