Computer Nerds and guns.

Looking at some of the profiles around here and the thread titled "Your profession, age, etc...", I am in shock at just how many computer geeks are into guns. I work as a Network Engineer\Server Admin for a large auto parts company. Our whole network\PC\server department are a bunch of guns nuts. We all CCW and we all own small arsenals.

I am trying to figure out if it is a trend in the computer industry or if it is just because anyone anymore that knows a thing or two about computers considers themselves an "IT professional"?

Anyhow, this sure beats the old stereotype that gun nuts are uneducated rednecks hicks that cannot read. If you read the anti's forums, that is what they are preaching.

Judging by this Forum, XD guys are pretty dang smart!!!

Hey, I'm not a redneck... but I can't read... binary code at least. I think if the anti's would actually look on these forums, they would see that the majority of the people are well rounded educated people. And even those who don't have a college education, seem like normal people who just enjoy guns and enjoy life. Honestly, I don't think in being here on this forum about 3/4 a year now that I've seen anyone on here acting violent, acting like they want to threaten people. We may have some "rednecks", but the only thing I see coming from them is that they love shooting guns, just like the rest of us do.

What I do see on here is a bunch of people, coming together to preach gun safety, share information on how to keep yourself safe against attackers, and how to protect our rights. If that makes us bad people, then I am glad to be a bad person.

I think what we're seeing is that CCW is becoming the norm around the country, and suddenly a lot more people are less likely to feel publicly ashamed to own guns and carry guns. For so long gun owners just get dirty looks from people who find out they own guns. Now with CCW being so popular, we get Dr's, computer programmers, etc, proudly showing they own a gun. As you stated, it can only help the anti's realise that being a gun owner, does not make you a "gun totin redneck".

And, just for clarification, I have nothing against rednecks. I am a country boy by birth and grew up on a farm. Nearest town with a big store was 20 miles. I have been accused of being a redneck many of times. I decided to head out, join the Army, get an education and get into computers. I am finding more and more people that are well educated that are into guns. I am still trying to figure out exactly WHO these anti's are? I think they are a fringe group of idiots that own the media. Many of the people that I know that aren't fond of guns, are easily persuaded to our way of thinking. I have even taken a few of my "reluctant" friends to the range, and they are all out gun nuts now!! What's not fun about peeling off a couple hundred rounds of .308 at bowling pins? (except the cost)

Check out http://www.geekswithguns.com/. Computer and gaming geeks who like guns.

I think stereotypes just don't get anyone anywhere; there are just too many different kinds of people.

I'm a California liberal, but I enjoy and own guns and all of my liberal family and friends are okay with that ... and most of them really enjoy shooting them with me. I haven't met a single person yet who freaked out about my guns. My girlfriend was a little intimidated by them at first ... a big scary metal thing that goes "bang" and can kill whatever you point it at ... but she has warmed up to them and really enjoys rifle shooting now.

At the same time, I grew up in Idaho, and I knew a lot of great people who were conservatives or even ... gasp ... "Rednecks". A lot of times there's more common ground than you realize. The friendliest people I ever met were rural conservatives in Oklahoma; great hospitality down there.

In my experience, most "anti gun" people are really "anti criminal gun" people, often parents who are worried about violence and their kids. They
don't really want to take the guns from the good guys ... but they want to take the guns from the bad guys so much that they're careless about it spilling over onto us. (Note I said "most" ... I know there are some people who really are anti-gun to the core.)

People are just scared of what they don't understand... it's part of human nature. If you grew up with black friends, you tend not to be racist. If you went through college with gay friends, you tend not to be homophobic. And if you grew up with guns, you tend not to be afraid of them. And if you didn't ... well, fears are irrational. That's people for ya.

So I just try to introduce liberals to guns whenever I can, to help them get over their fears so they won't keep voting for stupid anti-gun laws. And because shooting is fun and I like company.

First of all, thanks for the link. I run a large Unreal Tournament Clan, and have for the past 6 years. I love gaming and guns.

Secondly, your post was dead on. One of the better posts that I have read in a while.

How about this:

Most people who are active on forums are more computer savvy than the average bear, and therefore tend to get adopted into similar roles in their company.

Hence, forum visitors in general happen to be "IT" people. XD forum members are just "XD toting IT people".

Which clan? I used to play a lot of UT99 and UT2004, though not as much these days. I suspect I'll probably buy a new PC to play UT2007 when it comes out. I even sunk a couple hundred hours into making an Onslaught map and mod for UT2k4 at one point, but I never quite finished it and my energy for it passed with the deadline for the "Make Something Unreal" contest.
