Dremel advice?

All,

I'm thinking about chopping my Service to Subcompact length, and would love to hear some advice about dremel tools. I think the battery version would be more convenient, but does the corded version offer more torque/better performance? How reliable are the cordless models?

Secondarily, I'd love to hear from owners of "off brand" dremels. I know there are other makes out there for less - anyone have one they love? I live in an apartment and honestly wouldn't have much use for the thing except for occassional projects like this.

Thanks!

I have both and they work great. Now that said. they should past a law where anyone with a weapon should NOT own a dremmel ("hint, hint") I heard (not me, really, uummmm yeah )of people ruining thier 1911, I mean pistols...and some rifles...

I did mine with the cordless version and had no trouble as far as power/ torque goes...

Yes - just the grip. I have no plans of hacking into the slide. That being said, the polished barrels I've seen look pretty good...

And thanks for the tip, Nerves. I've done plenty of hand-polishing of metal parts and spent hours rasping, sanding, filling and finishing gun stocks. I've got a rifle that I've spent over 200 hours on, including over 30 just checkering the forend and grip. I think a man can accomplish a lot with a hacksaw, a set of needle files and time, but a dremmel with a cutting wheel seems like the right tool to do the rough cut in this case.

You hacksaw will curse you if you buy a Dremel tool. I have a battery operated Dremel. Seems to work pretty good for whatever I use it on. Getting ready to buy a couple more tools for it. One for cleaning primer pockets and one for doing the finish work on my new teeth I'm getting in a couple weeks.

I have the Black and Decker corded version, and it works great. I've used it to polish both XD barrels and I've used it for grinding/sharpening/shaping/ and shining brass buttons on my uniform.

I polished my barrel too, I think I like it... It looks pretty good, but I think I might go over it with some steel wool, to sorta give it that brushed look and so it doesnt reflect light as bad... lol its like a mirror finish now :P... havent decided if i want to do the very end of the muzzle or not... ive just did the breech part...

also... after youve put a few thousand rounds through it, the barrel starts turning silver from all the sliding anyways... so why not just make it look better

I can only vouch for the corded brand-name Dremel. I've lugged mine around in my work van for three years doing all kinds of locksmithy-type stuff and it's still going strong.
