I don't mind having to have a permit to buy. All it really is, is a pre-approved background check that is good for 3 years. Go to the local sheriff's office where I live and it takes like 20 minutes to get the permit, rather than waiting 3 days at the police station. Actually seems to save a bit of time during the purchase process, because they don't have to wait for a background check to come back.

And by the way, latest news I heard was the autopsy reports shored up the idea that this was a suicide. I have yet to hear that it was a rented gun, or whether the guy brought his own gun. But there were people in teh room when it happened. I'm not sure if anyone saw him shoot himself, but apparently people did see him fall from behind the partitions that separate the shooters. I think someone said this is the 3rd suicide they've had, and I believe they've been open around 10 years or so.

Dang! I've shot there plenty of times. Those guys run a tight ship. One guy is a former Army firearms instructor, if memory serves me correctly. You have to sign the log book every time you shoot, and it has the rules & liability waiver. Man, this sucks.

It's the dirty little secret of the range business. I know a gent who owns a range in Texas, and he had one last year and 5 yrs ago, he had 2 in the same month. It's kinda like AD/ND's It's not if, it's when it's gonna happen.
