Thiking of starting with a plinker semi-auto. Held one today at the gun shop and it felt good. Anyone like these or had one. Interested in reliability or any quirks to thei model. Also any recommendations to other 22s that are similar. I think this had a 4.5 in barrel. Thanks

Man, if I were looking at a 22 auto like that I would sure look long and hard at the SIG mosquito before the Walther p22. It's not but maybe $75 more and seems like a whole lot more gun. The p22 I got to shoot on multiple occasions had an ill-fiting manual safety that would 'shoot loose' and come on spontaneously. I guess it's better than a safety popping off spontaneously but a pain none the less.
If you don't mind a bigger gun, Ruger and Browning both make excellent 22's in the $250 to $300 range.

Old P22s do indeed have a lot of problems, but the newer ones are top notch.
Wather and S&W seem to have worked through many of the problems. My P22 (an older model) was replaced because it couldn't get through a magazine without malfunction. S&W sent me a new P22 and it has been perfect. This is a far cry from the old one. The mosquito is new, and from what I read, is having its "new model" issues much like the P22 did. On other words, I wholeheartedly recommend the P22. What about the Ruger Mark II or III? Buddy of mine has one, it's amazing!!! -stunks |

Pretty good site. I like the gun. It has it's problems but it's a pretty good shooter.

I have an older model (around 3-4 years old) and it runs like a top.
When I first got it, it did have a bit of a problem cycling rounds every so often. I called S&W and they confirmed that mine had the updated magazines, recommended I clean it well, then lube the beegeebes out of it and they claimed it'll feed anything from then on...and they were RIGHT! If you get one, feed it high velocity rounds for the first several hundred, then it should eat anything...I know mine does. I probably have nearly 10,000 rounds through it since every time I take it to the range it gets double and triple the number of rounds the "big guns" get.

Well it sounds like an OK pistol but the saftey latch sounds like a concern if your not familiar with semi automatics. I saw the Ruger Mark 3 and I'm remembering a sophisticated target pistol with a long barrel. I'll do some more homework. thanks

Get it and a 550 round brick of 22 for 10$ and go to town!!! You can't go wrong with it. It will teach you all about how to grip, clean and use the gun man get one and start slow!!
