Gun vs. Knife Follow Up with Video

The post about guns vs. knives created a flood of strong opinions and great information.
Now there's a must-see video that really illustrates what a guy with a knife can do against a guy with a pistol.
Here's a follow up post that points to gotta-read articles and to the very sobering video itself. http://tinyurl.com/pfjft

maybe thats why LEO's maintain positive contact on their sidearms when they make a stop. also coming from a military point of view I have to say that if he started charging me with a knife I would say screw the gun for now I have to deal with the knife. None of the officers even tried to get out of the way when he charged them.

I'm not going to correct anything here with "Oh well I would have done this than this than this." But I think instinctively I would make an attempt to dodge the attack. I'm used to moving out of the way of extremely heavy/fast/sharp items at work usually even if you're not fully paying attention if you see something from the corner of your eye moving at you your brain tends to move you.

Edit: Awesome video though. It's an eye opener for sure. Knives are more dangerous than firearms. They should be banned in california, NYC, and all other major cities.

Old News

This stuff is old news to those of us that train officers... there was a video some years ago entitled "Surviving Edged Weapons"; it shows that a knife-wielding, determined adversary within 21 feet can put you down even of you have a pistol and body armor. Very informative... we even designed a moving target that rushed an officer. Scary to shoot against it.

I think the primary thing I noticed while watching this is that both officers in the exercise attempted to do a full draw and aim/shoot, rather than a point shoot from the hip. At that range with that much impending danger, it seems a shot from the hip would be preferable and not give the attacker an entire arm (and exposed belly) to slash at.

Are the rules for LEOs so much different that a point shoot is unacceptable, even when faced with a knife-wielding attacker at close range?

You would not hit the target. The hip shots are strictly a Collateral situation. stationary predictable attacker.

Agreed. We train at recert for an attack and no one has been able to beat the 7 yards rule from a closed holster. I carry in a Blackhawk CQC with no thumb break and I thought I was pretty fast. At 21 feet, I just got it out and up when the "attacker" was lunging at me with his plastic knife.

Would like to try it out against the moving target........

I gotta say, its amazing how fast that guy was able to reach and strike the target before most of the cops even had their guns OUT, let alone up and able to fire.

Scary stuff.
