That's actually one of the things I like about turbos--if you want to drive it hard, the power's there. If not, just baby it and still get good fuel numbers. Now if I only had about $30k for an STI.......

Ive got a 04 stage 2 WRX that is easily as fast (if not a lil faster) than a stock STi. Thats the thing about the WRX, easy and cheap to make REALLY fast. I get about 18-20 city mpg and I drive it like I stole it...

I've heard from some Subee folks that the stock WRX tranny isn't as strong as the STi's, and it's possible to strip out first and second if you're in the habit of launching regularly. Any truth to that?

Definitely truth in that. I know someone who drives his in autoX, and hes on his third. First two were stock rebuilds, this one has RA straight cut gears in 1-4 and seems to be holding up much better. The STi is built like a tank though. Ive heard they made some improvements to the 06 transmission though, because of all the problems.

+1 to that. Every year they claim to make the base WRX tranny stronger, but every year people still blow them. Wouldnt suprise me if they are just throwing the same 04/05 tranny into the 06 cause that is something that subaru would do.

and on subarus defense, some people REALLY beat the crap out of their trans dropping the clutch at every light and then wondering why they strip off 1st or 2nd.
