Congrats on the new job. Get some nitrile gloves, really get some. As far as holding back the first week, they are probably just getting you on the schedule for getting paid. I know I have gone thru this discussion many times with my employees. They think I am keeping a week's worth of wages, when all I am doing is getting them on the schedule of getting paid. I run all my guys paycheck thru Paychecks payroll service, nobody holds anything back other then the taxes. But because I only do payroll every two weeks, they sometimes think I am keeping a weeks worth of wages.

First day on the job is like the first day of school. New things to do and learn. Should be a real hoot. Good luck...

Good luck. Remember, if you screw up, both you AND your dad are going to look bad.

If you work hard and give more than what the company expects, that $14 per hour will be a mere memory before long. It's like the old saying. "I don't have to run faster than the bear, just faster than my buddy." If you run harder than everyone else, exceeding the companies expectation, you are more valuable than anyone else, therefore you can expect a higher wage, perks.

Thanks for all the replies, im hot and im tired but it feels good to be back to work. I pulled out an old oil burning furnace in a basement and that old thing was like a tank, it was too heavy to lift and would not fit through the doorway and up the stairs so we had to take it apart piece by piece. Things just went running smoothly at all and the guy I was with kept saying "were bating ah thousand today" it made me laugh, he said it about 20 times all day long.

While at work I get a call from a Cable company I applied for asking me to come in for an interview and that they were very interested, they told me $14 hr. was acceptable. Now I took this helper job with my dad and I would feel like a total ass if I went with the cable company, I'm thinking I will have more back and growth with this plumping company. What do you guys think? The cable company is "Charter Communications" and the job would be a "cable technician" I probably wouldn't have to get up as early and I would be getting the same wages. ( I get up at 5:30 am now, work starts at 7:00 am) Please let me know your thoughts

Thanks again

Congrats! Pay attention, do as you're told, and you'll be on your way!

Do you want to become a plumber? We need skilled trades people out there in a big way. I can't tell you how tough it is to hire in the trades these days...plumbers, carpenters, and HVAC technicians are worth their weight in gold.

I have given being a plumber a lot of thought over the years, my dad has been in the trade over 40 years so it kinda wears off on a guy growing up around it. Its a nice trade to be in and good pay. The Union around here is from what I hear a place where you need "connections" to be treated right. I've heard a lot of stories about the Union. I do know that the Union has its benefits but if you don't have family or connections in the Union your SOL.
