As others have already said, most laptop chargers nowadays are rated for 100 - 240 V; you'll be fine if yours is. But the surge suppressor is a completely different story.
You're right I had a brain fart on the whole foreign outlets part.

Shouldn't the fuse have blown?

That's a fair question, but I don't know. Maybe it was a cheap suppressor and didn't have a fuse? Maybe the ball of flame was the fuse blowing with spectacular effect? Dunno. All I know is, you couldn't pay me enough to plug another U.S. suppressor into a British outlet....
