I don't know if you guys have seen this trailer. After seeing it I can't help but think about the guys I have talked to who came to me. Asking if they should join! I come from a big military family, and since my cousin is not around to talk to them, they ended up talking to me! I never served, my father (USArmy retired 101st deceased), my uncle (USArmy retired 4th ID deceased), five cousins, 1 marine, 1 crackerjack, 1 USAF, and two USArmy. Being around these guys I pick up alot of know-how.

What I've been telling the guys is first just request an ASVAB test. Just tell them you want to see what you can get. I tell them that there is an unsaid goal number 50 or higher. If you get this you have a very good chance to get what you want. Blah blah. After you know what mos you can get then do some soul searching. Then after that time you still want to go, then go!


I do believe that not all of us could be soldiers! And that some of the soldiers now should not be one! I have met allot of people who join to get away. And since most of the guys I've met are from less that ideal background they have very little choice! One of my distant cousin (well very distant) had a real f-up entry into the service. He was in Jr. College and worked partite, his roommate left and he was having a big problem paying for allot of things. On top of other stressful matters! He kept asking his mother for help but his stepfather always had a way of diverting money from him. He told his mom that he has to move out of his apartment, she said move back home. Two days after he settled in, the stepfather ask him to come with him to the store to get cigarettes! It just so happened that the store was next to a recruitment office, while in the car the stepfather said. "Some one is in there waiting for you"

Five months later he was trading dirty jokes with some guy from Arkansas while their boots dangle on the skid. He did not like it at first, not until AIT, and eventually Sabalauski Air Assault School. After that he's been doing fine. He said he feels bad that he left his mom with the azzhole but he needed to save himself first.

I know the saying only two types enter the service, one who loves it, and one who hates it. Never an in-between!

From the service men in this forum how could you tell, if a newbie bright eyed, very green from the promo if they make good soldiers? They want to be Rangers, Seals, Marine Scout snipers, Special Forces, Delta...
I tell them being physically fit is an after thought, that you need to be smart, and have mental endurance to put up with that training. Buds, RIPS are basically a mental endurance challenge. And yes brainwashing, but it's a brainwashing that you either embrace or reject!

During the summer time and sometimes on the weekend I teach basic Kung Fu and Liondance. Allot of the kids are now in high school, and many of them are coming to me pamphlet on hand. It's not a question of sending them to die, but more of a question of how do you know if they would make good soldiers! I cannot tell! I stick with the above, telling them to find the job you really want. And think it trough!
