I am looking for a mp5 in 40 s&w, but I recently heard about a carbine. What is the difference and what do you all recommend. I basically want a swat team looking gun like on the movie SWAT where they use the naval MP5 with all the surefire acc.

Well carbines are generally shortened versions of full sized rifles or have a shorter barrel (16-18 inches) or is a rifle shooting pistol calibers. So the term carbine is fairly generic. It then comes down to what you are looking for. Ruger has the PC9 (9mm) and the PC4 (.40 S&W). Beretta has a carbine, there is the M1 Carbine, M4 Carbine, Winchester 94 carbine, Hi-Point and a bunch of others have carbines. Pistol caliber carbines are a hoot and some say its convenient to have one that uses the same caliber as your pistol. Since I am not going to be clearing houses or taking part in full auto shoots the MP-5 would be a little expensive for me (and just a little Mall Ninja) but I have had my eye on the Ruger PC9 because it is a fun little plinker and I can use the same magazines as my Wife's P-95.
BTW: Aren't you in Kommiefornia? What use would an MP-5 be if you are limited to 10 round magazines...

I'm pretty sure you don't want to drop the $15K on an MP5 for home defense. Especially because they only come in 9x19mm and 10mm. And they're not approved for civilian sales in the PRC, I'm pretty sure. Then there's the mall ninja factor. Anyway, if you want to carry an MP5, become a Navy SEAL or something. Otherwise, I'd recommend one of the above mentioned carbines (coughbarettacough).

Its Ninja and has nothing to do with you. A Mall Ninja is a person who acts and dresses like a special forces operator when the closest they will get to close quarter combat is their PS2 or Xbox copy of SOCOM US Navy Seals. If you do a search in this forum for Mall Ninja there are a couple of threads floating around fairly recently.
Most of the carbines above especially the M4 can be made to look tactical if that is what you want to do. The hand guard for the M4 has several rails to attach lights, re-dot scopes, handles and all sorts of neat stuff. At my last 3-gun competition some of the shooters had some great rigs that gave them a huge advantage over folks who did not have all sorts of tactical stuff hanging from their carbines (me included.).

The bad thing is...you're in California...which means you're limited to 10 rounds. Not a real problem, but why plop down the money on an AR or FAL, if you can only load it with 10 rounds? Kinda silly, if you ask me. Can you even buy ARs, FALs or HK carbines in CA these days? I thought those things were banned?
Another option...very different, but very practical if you think about it...is to get a Marlin lever action in 357 or 44 magnum. Then, you have a CA legal short and handy rifle in a caliber that you can load hot for defense or hunting and load it light for plinking. Since its a lever action and not a semi-auto, theres no worry about jamming and theres no detatchable magazine to lose or fumble with. They're light, short and slim and easy to manipulate and hold 8-10 shots. They're fairly accurate and don't have the negative connotation as the ARs and other "assault" type rifles and have a more sedate "cowboy/deer hunter" look. The 357 magnum and 44 magnum are very powerful and have alot of knockdown power and theres tons of ammo choices for defense and hunting. The 38 Special and 44 Special are light-kicking, quiet and can provide fun easy plinking. There are also several 44Spl defensive loads that are low penetration and are very close to the 45ACP in energy and stopping power. The 223 is highly penetrative...think about that if you live very close to others or have several people in your dwelling. The 357/44 much less so. I know it sounds crazy, but the Marlin lever action rifles really make alot of sense if you're wanting a rifle for home defense and you live where there is a 10rd magazine limit. You could also buy a Marlin 357 or 44 mag rifle and a reloading machine for what you'd pay for the AR or just about any other assault type rifles. I own a 357 and 44 Marlin and love them. ...worth a look.

Anyway I hope you have fun searching the forum for Carbines. I know there a few dozen threads that are already about this subject.
