DIY/Cut Your Own Grips Response
I was recently made aware of the following thread (I thought about being a XD Talk supporter but ...) regarding some grip templates I was offering. Since the thread was locked, I am responding here.
I'd like to start by saying that it is now apparent that offering templates shaped like grips offered by others (i.e, Eric's grips) was a poor idea. I apologize. Unless I am mistaken, the shapes in question were not copyrighted or protected. Due to this, I thought it would be cool to save the customer some money by selling the tape and the templates. With my system, you got more grips for less money, you just had to cut them yourself. Since it appeared (and still appears) that these shapes were not protected property, I thought the product was a good idea. To use an anology, Wilson Combat makes extractors, firing pins, etc., that look exactly like parts that Springfield Armory makes. They are shaped exactly the same. Is Wilson Combat stealing from Springfield? Eric's Trugrips are shaped like the outside of the XD grip. Does this mean that Eric is stealing from Springfield? You could apply this to hundreds of other gun parts and hundreds of other manufacturers. Unless these shapes are copyrighted or patented, others have the right to use them also. It appears that Ampleworks (and a couple others), are trying to make me out to be a liar and a thief by fishing through some of my comments about some other issues like trigger jobs and guide rods. For what it's worth, I did want to learn how to do my own trigger job. What's wrong with wanting to save some money and do it myself? I did also buy one of Don's guide rods and I did ALSO make one myself that is currently in my gun. What's wrong with this? Additionally, what would be wrong if I did decided to make guide rods or do trigger jobs? Even though I still think the grip templates were a cool idea to save folks money, I now understand that I was inconsiderate of Eric's work. I again apologize and I've quit offering the templates. Darren

I originally had the idea to post a message similar to what you just posted... now I'm mad. You stole my thoughts and posted them yourself.
Seriously though... meet me behind the dumpster on 34th & Front Street. I'll have the case of money, you just bring the tape and templates. Why, you ask? Because I want one! hah |

Darren,
Being that the shape was so close to Eric's design, I understand why so many felt passionate on the matter. Copyrighted or not, the idea still belonged to a fellow shooter, hence the uprising. As most know, the shooting community, especially the practical/defensive shooting crowd, is an extremely ethical group that works hard to keep it that way. I commend you for posting your thoughts and apology and removing the template from your site. I am sure Eric will be happy too. Scott

For what it's worth to you all, Eric and I have talked. I apologized to him and he accepted my apology.
On another note, I'm going to send an email to Eric right after I finish this post asking him if he would be interested in having my cut-your-own system. Although it might take away sales from his pre-cut grips, I think it might add value to his line and he'd be able to appeal to both the do-it-yourselfers plus the guys that just don't want to fool with cutting them out. First off Thanks For Manning UP
Being in the auto repair business I have seen others thought and hard work get stolen.I.E copied whatever a few to many times. If you figure out how to make something better than the guy next to you. Then he profits from it. Here is one example Dodge intrepid. Evaporator core(The part in the dash that provides A/C) Many of us found that you didn't have to fully remove the dash Like the repair manual said.Note these where so bad Chrysler extended the warranty from 36,000 to 70,000 miles. One guy go to the training center and brags about them paying 7 hours and he can do them in three He tells them how I will apologize about the way I handle this really wasn't the best
