The only stupid rule I've come across is ranges not letting you pick up your own brass. Screw that. I paid for it. It's just a way for them to make more money off you. Those ranges are your tacti-gay types though.

We can bring our own, but it has to be brass, no steel or aluminum. Also, no incendiary rounds as some idiot shot them a while back and caught the place on fire.
If you rent guns, you have to buy and shoot their ammo.

Wait, why do they care if it's steel or aluminum cased? Because they can't make more money by selling off the spent casings to reloaders/suppliers? 
Both of my primary ranges allow FMJ of any kind up to .30-06 as long as it isn't magnum, tracer or armor piercing.

We can bring our own ammo, but the couple of local ranges I've been to only allow pistols.

At the range I shoot at, I can bring my own ammo, rifle or pistol, including when I shoot rentals. They allow all pistols and rifles up to .223 on 20 of the lanes, and all rifles including 50 bmg on the other 2. I always pick up my brass if I want to and they've never said anything to me about it.

At my range you can shoot your own ammo through your own gun. Rent one of theirs and you have to shoot their ammo.
You can shoot anything there, even 50 Cal BMG.

You can bring your own at mine except for steel tip or tracers.. Which I can understand.. They have given me **** for using steel before..

Regarding brass collection...the range officer at my local range gave me two reasons " if it hits the floor it's the store's", one being they don't want people running all over bent over grabbing brass on a live indoor range...and second, yes they do resell the spent casings to subsidize the costs...fair enough. I asked about brass catcher bags...they said again.."if it hits the floor, it's the store's..." good enough for me, granted, I don't reload, but for those that do, why not ask about the catchers?
