Nebrraska CCW class (proposed rules)

Today a meeting was held about what to do as far as making the CCW class. The state patrol is in charge of setting up rules, and requirements for the training. So far what I can tell, is it is suppose to be a 16 hour class, with 4 hours range time. They say it will take about 4 days. And also, we have to pay $100 to the state patrol for our permits, plus probably over $115 for the class.. they won't say exactly how much more than that.

Now, I'm all for getting as much training as possible with a gun. But doesn't this seem like too much? We'll end up probably paying $300 for our CCW permits, and spending 4 days in training. 4 days of training, and you might not even get your CCW permit after that.

Also on the topic of nebraska CCW. State patrol is going to keep permit holders names confidential. But the dept of motor vehicles, is going to make them public record along with our drivers information. That really ticks me off. That is a guarantee that some newspapers are going to list the names of people in that city who have permits. I don't think that's fair. How am I suppose to rely on having a concealed weapon, that nobody knows about, if everyone knows I have a permit?

I know other states give CCW license holders to the DMV, so when the police runs your license, they'll know you may be carrying, especially if you didn't tell them right off teh bat like you're supposed to.

that's fine, I'm all for allowing police to know who is carrying... but public shouldn't be able to get that information. There's got to be a way for it to be attached to your drivers license for police to be alerted to it, while keeping it confidential to everyone else.

Cwp

They do that in the Carolinas and my buddy's wife had the cop get fiesty with her cuz he got the alert that plate had concealed carry and she told the cop she didn't tell him she was carrying because she wasn't. Some cops are going to be jerks no matter what.

But why don't they just remake my driver's license so it has a code on it just like for my glasses so the cop knows I'm permitted and can ask where I'm carrying if I haven't told him ?

Kansas

I know here in KS they will list it as an endorsement on your DL or you can get a seperate card. The public will not have access to any list of who has a CCW. And the police can know as soon as they look at the card if you have a permit. Without having to go back to the car and run it through the computer.

In the paper recently there have been comments from people saying that nebraskans need the strictist training when it comes to CCW. It's funny that they fail to see how well it's worked in other states, who have less training, and some with next to none. It doesn't take 12 hours to teach someone why you don't pull the trigger if you don't have to, and why you don't threaten people with your gun. And it doesn't take 12 hours to teach me how to recognize someone as a threat to my life.

Then to top it off, not only do people want us to have the hardest training in the country, they want to call us cowards for wanting to conceal our guns. We're cowards because we won't proudly open carry our guns like the wild west. I'll gladly open carry my gun, if they'll gladly keep their damn mouth shut and not call the cops when they see my gun on my hip. Somehow I don't think they are willing to do this.. perhaps because they are too cowardly to be around a gun?

I can't wait to spend probably $250 on my CCW license so I can carry and avoid morons, then have so much training that I would easily be able to have my permit honored in any state. wait a minute, that can't happen because we won't accept anyone elses... ever.. because no other state is lame like Nebraska and force it's citizens to take a 4 day CCW course, so they won't have our standards.

Do you know that some police chiefs in this state are saying that 16 hours of training isn't enough for us? Apparently they think someone with CCW is the same as a cop. A cop has to know when to shoot someone, when he or she rolls up on a site not knowing what the hell is going on, who is guilty, or who is doing what. A person with CCW, knows when a threat is there because someone is freaking attacking them! Apparently they don't believe any amount of training would let us know when our life truly is in danger. It doesn't take the non stop training, repeated firearms qualifying every year, to know when my life is in danger, or know when it's just some moron calling me a name that I brush off.

Some good news on this issue. State Patrol revised their requirements on getting the permit. Hasn't been set in stone, but there were no people against it at the latest meeting on it. They don't state how many hours of training need to be done, but that just as long as all the material outlined is gone over in the course. So in theory, that could shorten the course significantly. The prior 16 hours was way too much. They are even talking about allowing training from outside the state be used to get the permit, as long as that training course is ok'd by the state patrol for use. I still don't know about having to retake the course every 5 years to renew. I don't see it in the new draft of the rules. It's possible they removed it. Anyway, I'm just glad to see that 16 hour talk gone. They were also talking about how a shorter class such as one given by the NRA, much like most other states will allow reciprocity if the state chooses to do so in the future.
