Martial arts

Does anyone here know any martial arts? I took Akikido a little ways back but barely remember any of it. Thinking of taking Krav Maga or Muay Thai. Which do you guys prefer and why?

I know joe jitsu, karate, judo and several other foreign words. I also have a blackbelt. It's made by the Beltman and carries my 45.

Being in NJ I cant carry my gun at all times. Nor do I want to be bloodguilty if I dont have to be. I think martial arts is a good supplement to having a gun.

Get back into Aikido. I ended up being a 2nd dan even though my instrutor never told me. He thought I was some kind of prodigy. I met up with him about a year after I stopped and he asked me if I had been practicing. I said no and he grabbed me and tossed me like a rag doll! I got up and he tells me how he wasted so much time and effort on this 2nd dan and others should have more respect for the art they chose!! I knew he was up to something cause then he went into his office and got me my 2nd dan certificate and belt. He was never able to give it to me. What a great guy!!

i've studied korean karate here at school but it's cool b/c the club is a conglomerate of martial artists (university setting) so I got exposed to numerous styles. plus, we went over a lot of self defense techniques not necessarily encompassed by any specific style.
honestly, debating the different styles is like arguing about calibers. there's a few fundamental things i've learned that are important...

1) getting hit and learning how to take a hit/recover from one
2) being in a fighting/sparring situation and practicing. you can mentally prepare/theorize all you want but BEING in that adrenaline pumped, hit-or-be-hit frame of mind will best prepare you for dealing with a real life situation
3) the balance/speed/flexibility associated with working out consistently and training your body.

overall, there are a lot of good styles out there... i would try not to get confined by any one style and be sure to keep your mind open to all options. every discipline has its strengths and weaknesses. i've only been in 2 physical confrontations in my life... (prior to when i carried a weapon but supported my decision to get and carry one) and came out of them pretty well. both times, i was able to defend myself until the opportunity for escape and evasion presented themselves. both of the occurred b/c of a lack of situational awareness on my part (walking down the wrong street alone on both occasions).

overall, martial arts are like guns... you just need to find the one that fits you best and you're best able to utilize.

I have a 3rd dan black belt in Bujinkan Budo Taijutsu, and a yellow belt in Tae Kwon Do.

While many martial arts are not taught from a practical standpoint, I feel that a solid foundation in unarmed combatives is essential if you are going to be a fighter.

I think that people who think they can always pull a gun are fooling themselves, especially when presented with scenarios such as the Tueller Drill.

If I were given the choice between muay thai and krav maga, I'd choose krav maga from a practicality standpoint.

I study and teach Combat Hapkido, if you like a more "mixed martial arts" type of training, Combat Hapkido encorporates Hapkido, Aikido, Philipino stick and knife fighting, Brazillian Jiu Jitsu, and Tae Kwon Do in its training. We just eliminate the Non self defense aspects of MOST martial arts. We instead concentrate on what has true self defense applications.

There are great schools all over the world. Take a look.
