+1 here also. I have my brown belt and was only a couple of hours away from testing for red. Unfortunately real life and bills prevented me from staying the course. Although I still have all my paperwork(techniques) and I try to find friends who are interested in learning and do train when I can, though not often enough.

I am a black/white stripe, I test for my 1st degree Black in April. For "self defense" you cant beat it. And in the Denver school, Master Materkowski incorporates Tactical/Self defense Pistol and Shotgun training. We just had a seminar with Andy Stanford. In Oct. we have one with Hoc Hocheim "CQC" with an emphasis on Defensive HandGun and Knife.

I go to Karate classes once a week. I'm currently a purple belt testing to a be a brown belt.
I wouldn't say typical karate moves are good for self defense, but some of the moves could be used. We also train in self defense moves, which we do not use in sparring. I get to help teach kids karate and that is my favorite part about it now.

I was brown belt in Karate, but dropped practicing for several years now because of job. In college I also practiced Judo, find that more useful in self defense than the Karate. My Judo instructor was a big, tall Taiwanese who looked like a Sumo guy. He said with Judo, if he could grab a hold of someone on any part of his body, he would have him on the ground. Everyone of us in the class tried to prove him wrong: he was right. That probably why those commandos in Taiwanese military practice Judo.

I studied Thai for a while. While I like it, it's geared more for sport fighting. It can be applied in a self defense situation though. Krav is just a simplified form of Kung Fu ( JKD ). I've been studing Praying Mantis Kung Fu for several years now. It's very direct and in CQB it's quite devestating. It's one of the highest forms of Kung Fu from Shaolin.
The main thing however is to find something your comfortable with. No matter what you study, it doesn't amount to a hill of beans if you aren't comfortable enough to use it. I tried Choy Li Fut for a while and just didn't like it. Your body type also will determine what works for you. Just get out and try different things.

Learning any kind of art is better than learning nothing. Even boxing... though not traditionally viewed as an art will teach you to move out of the way and attack.

As a tall and wide man, think NFL lineman, what would be a good art for me? Anything requiring speed is probably out. I've considered Akido, Hapkido, Krav Magda, Judo or Jiu Jitsu.
