I studied Tae Kwon Do for a while as a kid, got all the way up to brown belt, then got tired of it. Later as a teenager I studied Jeet Kune Do, and really liked it and the philosophies behind it. Eventually I didn't have the time to dedicate to it that I felt I should, so I quit it also. My freshman year of college, I started studying Krav Maga. I can honestly tell you that it changed my life, and compared to the other styles I studied drastically different. I personally believe that it is one of the most, if not the most practical style in existance today. They teach you only what is practical and combat tested, and leave the rest out. It's quite diverse and covers basic combat, ground fighting, along with all types of disarmings for guns, knifes, and hand grenades. Depending on how long you stick around they will teach you long and short weapon tactics, etc. I would personally recommend Krav Maga hands down, BUT only if you're looking for something that is no frills and about practicality. The training is also in partners, real sparring, so you get to learn what it's like to have contact and experience. I hope that helps, and PM me if you have any questions

Eh, I cant blame him. Kids sometimes do not have the concentration that they need in a serious setting (they are kids!). That having been said, children have been among the best martial artists I have ever personally met. I once knew a 10 year old 3rd dan instructor in shorin ryu karate who was actually probably one of the best marial arts instructors I have ever met in terms of communicating a kinetic motion. And i bet he could not have spelled kinetic!

There are great schools all over the world. Take a look.
+1. My wife took this and really liked it, but our local school closed before she made Black Belt.

I can seem to get the link to work, the page loads and then just sits there with a black background and a white box in the middle?

Are there any schools in the Denver metro area? I did Aikido for about 3 years, but it's been 8 years now and I am looking to get back into something.
Thanks!

Hello Laz...

FWIW

MA is like the old kennelration dog food commercial jingle "My dogs better than you dog because he eats...." There is only so many ways a body can bend and move. What separates the styles is A. how they blend body mechanics B. How weapons are deployed and C. What the ancillories are they focus too.

Ask yourself...What interests you most between your two choices? Are you wanting to learn the mechanics of the art for self defence, or do you lean towards the philosophy aspects of the art.

Are you a patient person willing to devote time in learning an arts katas kihons, ippons an taezu's? Or do you prefer a more fast passed environment learning empty hand and weapon techniques.

Also your body size plays a role in your choice of arts

(*)as I over simplify..

*As you already know Akido is steeped in Philosophy, mysticism, and forms. It takes a great investment of time to learn and absorb it. Same goes for any of the traditional arts.

*Krav on the other hand ; basically starts immediately with "defence" techniques disarms and counters. Its a style geared for CQB.

* As previously mentined Hapkido is geared for CQB everyone remembers "Billy Jack" the park fight scene was styled after Hapkido. "Billy Jack" the fighter in the scene was Hapkido Master Bong Soo Do..

*Filipino martial arts immediately train the student in empty hand and weapons (dagger sword etc.) at the same time. Arnis, Escrima, Silat...

*Jujitsu styles focus to joint manipulation and destruction

As for Muay Thai I really cant comment on it. I've not studied it, as a onlooker it teaches great clinch work, love them elbows and knees. Elbow strikes are one of my favorites.

I've been a devoted student of the arts since the mid sixty's so I'm pretty set on MY approach to the arts If I was to pick between your two choices I would start with Krav, its more applicable to today's needs

Peace

I trained in Tae Kwon Do when I was in college. I enjoyed it as a sport and didn't see it so much as a self defense or survival skill. I seem to like shooting the same way.
